| 2005-06 Schedule/Results New Hampshire 8, Northeastern 2
The Northeastern women's hockey team was defeated 8-2 by No. 5 New Hampshire on Saturday, Nov. 19 at Matthews Arena. Jessica Coppney and Ashley Bielawski scored the goals for NU, while Nicole Hekle scored a hat trick and had five points on the night for the Wildcats. UNH outshot Northeastern 41-15 in the game. The 'Cats got on the board just 2:24 into the contest, with Hekle scoring on a partial breakaway. Defenseman Amy McLaughlin took the puck in the defensive end and found a streaking Hekle coming through the neutral zone. The junior deked to her right and slipped a backhander past Marisa Hourihan to the near side for her third goal of the season. Kacey Bellamy was also credited with an assist on the play. UNH extended its lead to 2-0 at 16:58 with a power play goal. With Erin Reil off for hooking, the ‘Cats worked the puck in the offensive zone, and Taylor Palazeti made a crossing pass to a wide-open Lindsey Caleo, who snapped the puck past a diving Hourihan. It was Caleo’s second goal of the season, and Nicole Goguen also picked up an assist on the man-advantage tally. Northeastern trimmed the lead to one at 3:29 of the second period, as Colleen Sanborn stole the puck in the UNH zone and fired a shot and Melissa Bourdon. Bourdon made the blocker save, but Coppney jumped on the rebound for her third goal of the season and second in as many games. UNH broke the game open midway through the second period, rolling off three straight goals to head into the locker room up 5-1 after two periods. With NU on a power play, Jennifer Hitchcock stole the puck at her own blue line and sprung Hekle on a breakaway. Hekle moved to her right and beat Hourihan glove side for her second goal of the game and fourth of the season. The New Hampshire special teams struck again two minutes later, as Bellamy scored her second goal of the season on a shot from the left point that went through a screen and found its way past Hourihan. Martine Garland and Jennifer Hitchcock received assists on the play. The Wildcats held a 4-1 lead late in the period, but would not settle for that lead, as Bellamy connected on a home-run pass to Sadie Wright-Ward, who eluded her defender and scored her seventh goal of the season. Garland also picked up an assist on the tally. The Huskies trimmed the deficit to 5-2 just 2:16 into the third, as Ashley Bielawski scored her fifth goal of the season. Courtney O'Connor wristed a shot from the far point that was knocked down in front, and Bielawski slipped the rebound past Bourdon. Cassie Sperry was also awarded an assist on the play. But that was as close as the home squad would get, as Hekle picked up her hat trick at 5:33 of the third. With a delayed penalty on NU, the Wildcats pulled Bourdon for an extra attacker and Hekle wristed a shot home from point-blank range to put UNH up 6-2. Goguen and Lindsay Hansen assisted on the tally. The 'Cats got a pair of oals in the closing minutes from Leah Craig, her ninth and 10th of the season, to wrap up the scoring. The first, at 5:56, was assisted by Hekle and Hansen, while the second, at 18:40, saw Hekle and Diana Saly pick up assists. Northeastern is back in action Tuesday, Nov. 22, when it will head to Durham, N.H., for the back end of the “delayed” home-and-home series. Game time is set for 7 p.m. at the Whittemore Center.
