The Northeastern women's hockey team netted four unanswered goals in the third period to earn a 4-2 Hockey East victory over Maine on Saturday, Dec. 3 at Matthews Arena. Nikki Petrich netted the game-winner and added two assists, while Crystal Rochon scored a pair of goals for the home squad. Marisa Hourihan made 31 saves for her fourth victory of the season, which lifted the Huskies to 4-11-1 (3-6-1 HE). The Black Bears are now 8-4-3 (1-4-2 HE) on the year. It marks the first time in the Laura Schuler era that NU has won back-to-back games.
After a scoreless first two periods, the Black Bears jumped out in front with a pair of power-play goals in a span of 1:56. Sonia Corriveau scored her fifth goal of the season at 1:35 on a centering pass that deflected past Hourihan. Sheri Wauters and Julie Poulin received assists on the play.
Maine struck again at 3:31, this time with Kelly Law blasting a shot from the point through a screen and past Hourihan for her fourth of the year. Poulin again picked up an assist, as the Bears held a 2-0 edge and a sizeable lead in the shot department.
Northeastern got one back at 4:55, as Rochon netted her first of the game and sixth of the year. Lindsay Snider sent an outlet pass up the near-side boards and Petrich corralled it at the blue line. Petrich fended off a defender and got a shot off from the slot, and the rebound came right to Rochon, who buried it near side.
The Huskies pulled even just after midway through the third, this time with Rochon off the ice for tripping. The Black Bears tried to get the puck to the left point, but Amy Goodney deflected the pass and broke in all alone up the right side. The junior captain fired a wrister high to Genevieve Turgeon's glove side and got the puck just under the crossbar for her third of the season and the first shorthanded goal of the year for NU.
With the score knotted at two, Petrich stepped up to the task with her fourth of the year. Jennifer Beaudoin threw a home-run pass up the right side that connected with Petrich, which sent her in with Rochon on a two-on-one break. Petrich elected to take it herself, ripping a wrister high to the blocker side to give Northeastern its first lead of the game. Rochon added an empty-netter with 33 seconds remaining, with Petrich picking up an assist.
Neither team could get an advantage in the first period, but the Maine power play moved the puck well and consistently had point shots from the tandem of Kelly Law and Julie Poulin. But the Huskies controlled the action in front of Hourihan, allowing her to save all three shots she faced while shorthanded, and blocking a total of four Black Bear shots. Maine outshot the Huskies 9-3 in the first.
The second period went much the same, with Maine piling up 10 more shots and shutting the Huskies down in the neutral zone. NU got the momentum toward the end of the period, though, putting a pair of shots on Turgeon while on a 4-on-4 situation.
Northeastern was outshot in the contest by a 33-12 margin, but the Huskies buried four of their seven shots in the final frame to earn a crucial two points. Maine went 2-for-7 on the power play while the Huskies were 0-for-6. It was the first time Northeastern has won consecutive games since Feb. 20, 2004, when NU won three in a row behind current Team USA goaltender Chanda Gunn.
The two teams will square off again on Sunday, Dec. 4 in the final meeting of the regular season between Maine and NU. Game time is set for 2 p.m. at Matthews Arena.
