The Northeastern women's hockey team returned from a four-week hiatus on Saturday, Jan. 7, but was defeated by Yale 3-0 in New Haven, Conn. Three different Bulldogs scored goals in the contest and Shivon Zilis made 16 saves in the shutout. Marisa Hourihan made 27 saves for NU. The Bulldogs improved to 5-7-3 on the season, while the Huskies fell to 4-14-1.
Jenna Spring netted the game-winner just 8:57 into the contest for her sixth goal of the season. Crysti Howser and Deena Caplette scored the other two goals for Yale, which is now undefeated in its last three contests (2-0-1).
The Huskies entered the third period down 1-0, but Howser gave the home squad some breathing room with her fifth goal of the season at 4:30 of the third. Kristen Stupay assisted on the play. Caplette added the final goal of the contest at 18:43 after Hourihan was pulled for NU. Howser and Regan Gilbride picked up assists on the score.
Yale outshot NU 30-16 in the game, but the Huskies had several opportunities in the closing period. NU went 0-for-6 on the power play, including an 0-for-4 mark in the third, while registering seven shots on the man-advantage. The Huskies killed off all four of Yale's power plays.
The Huskies are back in action on Monday, Jan. 9 when they play host to Boston College in a key conference contest. The Eagles defeated the Huskies 5-4 on Dec. 10 in the only meeting between the two teams this season. BC enters Monday's contest with a 6-7-4 mark overall and a 5-2-1 mark in Hockey East play.
