The Northeastern women's hockey team went head-to-head with No. 10 Ohio State and came out on the losing end of a 3-0 score Friday, Oct. 14 at Matthews Arena. Erika Vanderveer made 26 saves in the shutout, while Shelby Aldous scored the game-winning goal in the second period. OSU is now 3-0 while the Huskies are 1-1. Redshirt freshman Sarah Belliveau made 26 saves in a losing effort.
Ohio State held the edge for the first period, outshooting the Huskies by a 10-4 margin, but Belliveau stayed strong between the pipes, turning away all of OSU’s chances. Northeastern got a late flurry in the period, but Vanderveer was able to make a pair of saves in the final 10 seconds to keep the game scoreless. Ohio State was 0-for-2 on the power play, while the Huskies went 0-for-1.
Northeastern came out strong at the outset of the second period, peppering Vanderveer with six shots in the opening minute, but were unable to get the puck past the junior.
The Buckeyes got on the board at 7:50 of the second, with Aldous registering her second goal of the season. Katie Maroney beat her defender down the middle of the ice and got a shot on Belliveau that was turned away. Maroney then followed the rebound behind the net and sent a centering pass off Belliveau’s skate, and Aldous came in to punch home the rebound.
The Buckeyes padded their lead at 11:14 of the third, when Amber Bowman put home a power play goal to make the score 2-0. Freshman defenseman Kelly Cahill found Bowman in the high slot, and the junior ripped home a wrister to the far side. Morgan Marziali added an empty net goal at 19:48 with Jana Harrigan tallying an assist.
Northeastern went 0-for-8 on the power play, while holding OSU to a 1-for-6 margin. The Buckeyes outshot Northeastern 38-26.
The Huskies and Buckeyes will square off again Saturday, Oct. 15 at Matthews Arena. Game time is slated for 3 p.m.
