Rensselaer goaltender Ashley Mayr made 28 saves to lead Rensselaer to a 3-1 victory over the Northeastern women's hockey team on Friday, Jan. 13 at Matthews Arena. Crystal Rochon scored the lone goal for the Huskies, while Marisa Hourihan made 19 saves in the loss. RPI improved to 13-1-2 in its first season as a Division I school, while the Huskies are now 4-16-1.

The Engineers took an early lead when Melissa Boik knocked home her second goal of the season at 3:08 on the power play. The play began when captain Sarah Daniel grabbed the puck in the left hand corner and found sophomore Kelly Barbera on the point. Barbera went D-to-D with the pass and Boik slapped a one-timer low to Hourihan's left for the goal.

The Huskies dominated the second period, outshooting the Engineers 12-5. But despite eight shots from the Husky power play, Mayr stayed strong between the pipes to keep NU off the scoreboard for the majority of the frame. RPI struck again late in the period to take a 2-0 lead on Julie Welte's fifth goal of the season. Melanie Guillemette wound up for a slapshot from the right point, and Welte redirected it into the far corner to give the Engineers a two-goal cushion at 12:56. Jaime Jacquard-Sowa also was credited with an assist.

Things looked ominous toward the close of the second with RPI up 2-0 and skating on the power play with Lindsay Snider in the box for NU. But the shorthand unit came up big, with Nikki Petrich going one-on-one with a defender and putting a shot on goal. The rebound came right to Rochon in the slot, and the junior banged home her 11th of the season at 17:44 to trim the lead to 2-1.

The Huskies held the edge in play for most of the third period, but could not crack Mayr again, and Daniel put home an empty-netter with 11 seconds remaining for her 12th goal of the season. NU outshot the visitors 29-19, with Ashley Bielawski leading all players with 10 shots, a high for the Huskies this season. RPI went 1-for-5 on the power play while Northeastern failed to convert any of its five chances up a player.

NU hits the road next week for a Tuesday night game against Boston College at Kelley Rink and a Saturday contest with Providence at Schneider Arena. Game time on Tuesday is slated for 7 p.m., while Saturday's game will face off at 2 p.m.
