| 2005-06 Schedule/Results Providence 5, Northeastern 4 (OT)
Nikki Petrich and Erin Reil scored extra-attacker goals 19 seconds apart in the final minute of regulation, but Providence's Karen Thatcher netted the game-winner nine seconds into overtime to give the ninth-ranked Friars a 5-4 victory on Saturday, Jan. 21 at Schneider Arena. The Huskies came back from 3-0 and 4-2 deficits to force the extra session, but PC picked up a crucial pair of points, as it improved to 13-7-3 (7-2-1 Hockey East). Marisa Hourihan made 34 saves for Northeastern, which is now 4-18-1 (3-11-1 HE). Providence got on the board early in the first courtesy its first power-play opportunity. The Huskies had the puck in the offensive zone, but PC's Katy Beach stole the puck at the blue line and broke it through the neutral one for a 2-on-2 break. The freshman wound up and blasted a slapshot past Hourihan to the blocker side for her fourth goal of the season at 3:47. Jenna Keilch and Kristin Gigliotti were awarded assists on the tally. Northeastern had a great opportunity to knot the game at 1-1 three minutes into the middle frame. Petrich went around a defender and moved in all alone on PC goalie Jana Bugden. The sophomore deked to her right and tried to slip a backhander to the near side, but Bugden held the post with her right pad to make the save. The Friars upped their lead to 2-0 4:39 into the second when a Rachel Crissy broke up a clearing attempt by the NU defense. Stephanie Morris got the initial shot on net, and the rebound came to Ashley Payton on the far side. Payton slipped a backhander past Hourihan for her 10th goal of the season, with Morris and Crissy picking up the assists. PC continued its pressure and gained a 3-0 edge 6:41 into the second. After a scrum in front of the net, Gigliotti pinched in and chipped away at a puck in the crease that slid past Hourihan for the junior's 13th goal of the season. Karen Thatcher and Sonny Watrous were given assists on the tally. The Huskies trimmed the deficit to 3-1 with 5:35 to play in the middle frame while on the power play. Reil fed the puck to Crystal Rochon on the right point, and the junior blasted a slapshot toward the net. Marie Desrosiers tipped the puck high to Bugden's glove side and it found its way into the top right corner for the junior's second goal of the year. Rochon and Reil were given assists on the play. NU brought the game within one at the 17:18 mark of the second, when Rochon batted a rebound home from point-blank range for her second goal of the game and team-leading 13th of the year. Marie Desrosiers was credited with an assist on the tally that made the score 3-2. The score remained 3-2 until the 13:54 mark of the third, when the Friars capitalized on their first power play of the period. Karen Thatcher moved in on Hourihan and flipped a wrister that was deflected up in the air and fluttered into the net for the senior's 15th goal of the season. Beach assisted on the tally. The Huskies called a timeout with under a minute to play and that was incredibly significant for Northeastern. The Huskies pulled Hourihan and scored a pair of goals over a span of 19 seconds. With 46 seconds to play in the frame, NU pulled within one on Petrich's sixth of the season, a wrister that snuck just under the crossbar to Bugden's glove side. Rochon was awarded an assist on the tally. Then, with 27 seconds remaining in regulation, the Huskies got the puck into the offensive zone and crashed the net, with Reil potting her first career goal. Ashley Bielawski was awarded an assist on the play. The ninth-ranked Friars showed their resiliency in overtime, with reigning Hockey East Player of the Year Karen Thatcher netting the game-winner just nine seconds into the extra session to give PC two vital points in the Hockey East race. Watrous and Beach assisted on the extra-session goal to give the home squad a 5-4 victory. The contest was the fifth time in the last seven games that the Huskies have lost by a single goal. It was also the second time in the last four trips to Schneider Arena that NU has fallen 5-4 in overtime. Northeastern went 2-for-5 on the power play, while the Friars were 2-for-3. NU is back in action next weekend for a home-and-home series with Connecticut. Northeastern will host its fellow Huskies Saturday, Jan. 28, at 2 p.m. and will head to Storrs, Conn. for a 2 p.m. contest on Sunday, Jan. 29. Hockey Game Box Score (Final)
