Three different Huskies had a goal and an assist each and Marisa Hourihan made 42 saves for the Northeastern women's hockey team in a 4-3 victory over Boston University on Saturday, Feb. 4 at Walter Brown Arena. Jessica Coppney scored the game-winner for the Huskies at the 17:24 mark of the third, as she and Marie Desrosiers notched tallies less than two minutes apart in the third period. The Huskies improved to 5-20-1 (4-13-1 Hockey East) with the victory, which snapped a nine-game losing streak.
Nicki Wiart put the Terriers on the board at 1:44 of the first with Nikki Petrich off for a high stick. Amanda Shaw blasted a hard pass from the right point and Wiart deflected it past Hourihan's blocker for her ninth goal of the season. Erin Seman also picked up an assist on the play, which gave the Terriers a 1-0 lead.
Northeastern pulled even at 15:48 with a shorthanded goal. A BU shot was blocked in front of the net, and Petrich picked up the rebound and went coast-to-coast for her eighth goal of the year. The sophomore broke out of the defensive zone and had nothing but goaltender Allyse Wilcox between her and the cage. After moving into the zone, she deked to her backhand and slid the puck behind Wilcox for an unassisted goal.
The Huskies took their first lead of the contest at 4:54 as Ashley Bielawski picked up her ninth goal of the season. Petrich wone the offensive zone faceoff to Chrissy Sands in the slot, and Sands left the puck for Bielawski in front. The junior ripped a wrister low past Wilcox to give NU its first lead since it held a 1-0 edge over Maine on Dec. 4.
The Terriers tied the game at 2-2 10:09 into the third, with Kelley Karnan potting her fourth tally of the year. With BU on the power play, Gina Kearns centered the puck to Karnan, and the freshman got two whacks at the puck, the second trickling past a defenseless Hourihan.
NU regained the lead with 4:22 to play, with Desrosiers poking home a rebound for her fifth goal of the season. Jessica Coppney brought the puck out of the defensive zone and centered it to Ali Bielawski, who deflected a shot on net. Desrosiers pounced on the rebound and pushed it by Wilcox to put the visitors up 3-2.
The Huskies extended their lead at 17:24, with Coppney fooling Wilcox on a wrist shot from the top of the circle. The junior slipped the puck through a screen and between Wilcox's pads for her fourth goal of the year. Desrosiers and Ali Bielawski assisted on the goal.
BU pulled Wilcox with 1:30 to play and pressured the Huskies for an extra-attacker goal at 19:08. Wiart put home her second of the game and 10th of the season to bring the Terriers within one. Catherine Foley was credited with an assist on the play.
The home squad continued to pressure the Huskies, and appeared to tie the game with 17.5 seconds remaining, but the referee ruled that the whistle had blown before the shot was taken.
The Huskies are back in action for the 28th Annual Women's Beanpot Tournament on Tuesday, Feb. 7 at Harvard's Bright Center. Northeastern will face off with Boston College at 5 p.m. in the first round, while BU and Harvard will play at 8 p.m. The finals and consolation game will be played on Tuesday, Feb. 14.
