Crystal Rochon notched two goals and an assist and freshman defender Erin Reil potted a goal and had two assists, but the Northeastern women's hockey team lost a heartbreaker in the opening round of the 28th Annual Women's Beanpot, falling 4-3 in overtime to Boston College. Meghan Fardelmann scored the game-winner for the Eagles at 11:12 of the extra session, putting a rebound past NU goalie Marisa Hourihan to send BC to the championship game. Hourihan made 44 saves in her final Beanpot.

"I would have rather gone out with a 'W' but knowing I went out and gave it all I could is great," Hourihan said. "For the first five minutes we came out a little flatfooted, but after that we played as hard as we could. [My teammates] all played their hearts out."

"It was a very close game," head coach Laura Schuler said. "We played with a lot of energy, a lot of heart. The girls finally settled down, especially in overtime, and the momentum started to shift our way. They were playing with a lot of confidence out there. What's most important for us is we played our hearts out on the ice."

Northeastern got on the board first, scoring a 4-on-4 goal at 6:34 of the opening period. With the Huskies maintaining possession in the offensive zone, a Lindsay Snider shot low was kicked away by Quandt, but the rebound came to Erin Reil just inside the blue line. Reil wound up and blasted a slapshot through a screen and it found its way to the back of the net for her second goal of the season. Crystal Rochon was credited with a secondary assist on the play.

The Eagles struck back at 12:24, with Becky Zavisza crashing the net for her 13th goal of the season. Shannon Webster sent the puck into the zone to Jill McInnis up the left side. McInnis' centering pass was deflected by Reil, but Zavisza knocked it down and took two swipes at the puck, the second of which fluttered over Hourihan to make the score 1-1.

BC took its first lead of the contest at 7:14 of the second period while shorthanded. Deborah Spillane fed the puck to a streaking Maggie Taverna, who split the NU defense and moved in alone on Hourihan. The freshman lifted a backhander up and over Hourihan's blocker for her sixth goal of the season to put the Eagles up 2-1. Cristin Stuart received a secondary assist ono the play.

The two teams traded goals over a span of 32 seconds midway through the second. The Huskies struck first, pulling even with a power-play goal at 10:29 off an offensive zone faceoff win by Marie Desrosiers. Desrosiers tipped the puck to Reil, who fed it to Rochon inside the blue line, and the junior's slapshot snuck by Quandt low to the blocker side. The goal was Rochon's team-leading 13th of the season.

After matching minors on Jessica Coppney and Maggie Taverna, Boston College used the open ice from four-on-four play to retake the lead from Northeastern. The Eagles crashed the net once again, this time with Hourihan making a lunging save deep in her crease. But the rebound found its way to an open McInnis, who snapped a wriater past Hourihan for her fourth goal of the season. Cristin Stuart was given the only assist on the play.

Northeastern drew even at 13:07 of the third on a scramble in front of the net. Erin Reil had the initial shot from the outside and Kathy Sands put a rebound attempt on goal. Quandt denied the senior, but Rochon pounced on the rebound and slipped it behind Quandt for her second goal of the night and 14th of the season to tie the game at 3-3.

The Huskies return to action on Saturday, when they face off with New Hampshire at 2 p.m. at Matthews Arena. It will mark the final contest between the Huskies and Wildcats this season.
