Marisa Hourihan made 49 saves and Nikki Petrich tallied a pair of power play goals, but it was not enough as the Northeastern women's hockey team was topped by Ohio State 6-2 on Saturday, Oct. 15 at Matthews Arena. Six different Buckeyes scored to improve tenth-ranked OSU to 4-0-0 on the season. Northeastern is now 1-2-0 on the year.

Ohio State struck first, putting home a goal at 3:50 of the first period. Jana Harrigan carried the puck to the near side point and wristed a shot toward the Husky net. Mallory Peckels, setting a perfect screen on Hourihan, got her stick on the puck and tipped it just inside the far post for her first goal of the season. Morgan Marziali also picked up an assist on the play.

The Huskies knotted the game at 1:34 of the second period. With OSU’s Amber Bowman in the box for a high-sticking minor, Crystal Rochon controlled the puck behind the net and found a wide-open Petrich on the doorstep. Petrich quickly snapped the puck through Erika Vanderveer’s five-hole to make the score 1-1.

Petrich, who led NU in power play goals last season, struck again on the man advantage at 10:00, this time with junior Ashley Bielawski picking up an assist. Bielawski put a backhander on net, and the rebound fell in front of Vanderveer. Petrich took a pair of swipes at the puck, the second of which slid the puck underneath the netminder for Petrich's second goal of the season.

OSU climbed even at the 14:01 mark of the second, the beneficiaries of a 4-on-3 power play. With Petrich in the box for a slash, the Buckeyes used the open ice quickly to get Bowman an open shot from the point. The rebound came right out into the slot, and Katie Maroney wristed a point-blank backhander past a moving Hourihan to tie the game at two.

Ohio State got the game-winner at 8:32 of the third, as Harrigan took a Mallory Peckels pass and skated past the NU defense. Harrigan broke in alone and deked to her right, muscling a wrist shot past Hourihan's pad to the near side for her first goal of the season.

The Huskies had an opportunity to get even on the power play when Erin Keys went to the box for a slashing penalty at 9:50. But the OSU penalty kill held strong, and Kelly Cahill stole the puck in the neutral zone for a breakaway. She cut to Hourihan's right and put a backhander high over the senior's blocker for her third goal of the season at 11:25. It was the first shorthanded goal of the freshman's career.

The Buckeyes added a pair of empty-net goals in the closing minutes - Erin Keys scored at 17:54 on a pass from Jody Heywood and Megan Hostasek scored an unassisted goal at 18:46 - to finish off the game at 6-2.

Ohio State outshot the home squad 55-24 in the contest. Northeastern went 2-for-6 on the power play, while OSU went 1-for-6. Each team was whistled for seven penalties in the contest.

The Huskies are back in action on Wednesday, Oct. 19, when they travel to Northford, Conn. for a matchup with Quinnipiac. The Bobcats are 0-1-1 on the season after a trip to Boston this weekend. QU fought to a 2-2 tie with Boston University and fell in overtime to Boston College, 4-3. Game time on Wednesday is set for 7 p.m.
