The Northeastern women's hockey team fought to a 1-1 tie with the University of Maine on Sunday, Oct. 23 in Orono, Maine. Nikki Petrich scored the game-tying goal with 2:25 to play in the third period to earn the Huskies one point on the day. Marisa Hourihan made 22 saves, three in overtime, for NU. Northeastern remains undefeated in Hockey East (1-0-1) and is now 1-3-1 on the year. Maine moved to 3-2-1 this season (1-2-1 HE).
Petrich notched her team-leading third goal of the season at the 17:35 mark of the third period. Amy Goodney and Crystal Rochon were both credited with assists on the play. It was the second assist of the season for each player.
The Black Bears got their lone goal in the second period while on a four-on-three power play. After NU's Kathy Sands and Maine's Kelly Law were given matching roughing minors, Marie Desrosiers was called for obstruction-hooking to give the home squad a 4-on-3 edge. Katie Sunstrom fired a shot from the top of thr right faceoff circle past Hourihan for the power play goal, which came at the 6:46 mark, while Kim Meagher was awarded an assist.
The two teams each got several chances in overtime, with each team putting three shots on net. NU was given a brief power play late in overtime, when Maine was whistled for too many men at 4:10.
Each team went scoreless in the first period, with the Huskies outshooting the Black Bears by an 8-4 margin. Each team killed off one penalty in the frame.
Northeastern will try to remain unbeaten in conference play this Wednesday, Oct. 26, when it will host Boston University in search of its second win of the season against the Terriers. Game time is set for 7 p.m. at Matthews Arena.
