The Providence Friars (2-1-0, 1-0-0 Hockey East) scored three times in a six-minute span in the first period to help defeat the Northeastern Huskies (0-4-0, 0-1-0 Hockey East), 4-1, on Wednesday evening at Schneider Arena in Providence, R.I. The game was the 2006-07 Hockey East opener for both teams.

The Huskies did well to keep with the Friars for most of the game, but the team was done in by a stretch of 5:46 in which Providence scored three goals on six shots against Husky sophomore goaltender Stacey Scott, who was making her second start of the season - and first against the team she played for last season. PC's Kelli Doolin got the scoring started at the 12:31 mark, taking a pass from Sonny Watrous and putting it past Scott for Providence's first goal. Just over two minutes later, Caitlin Malboeuf scored her first of the season to give her team a two-goal advantage.

The Friars' Kristin Gigliotti doubled the team's advantage with two goals. Her third tally of the season came with 1:43 left in the opening period. After the teams played a scoreless second period, Gigliotti came out quickly in the third, scoring her second of the game 1:37 into the final period.

Senior Ashley Bielawski made sure the Huskies would not be shut out, however, scoring her first of the season at the 9:44 mark of the third period. Bielawski's goal, which came on the power play, was assisted by freshman Annie Hogan.

After a tough first period, the Huskies showed some resiliency in bouncing back against the Friars. Providence held a 27-21 edge in shots after two periods, but NU outshot the home team, 16-7, in the third period as the team attempted a comeback. Northeastern's 37-34 shot edge marked the first time this season NU had outshot its opponent.

Another good sign for the Huskies was that, for the first time in four games, Northeastern managed to shut down its opponents' power play. On Wednesday, the Friars were held to five shots in seven power play chances after scoring twice with a man-advantage in their last game against Colgate. With Bielawski's goal, the Huskies have also scored a power-play tally in back-to-back games.

Jana Bugden got her first win of the season for Providence, despite being forced to make 36 saves. Scott made 30 saves for Northeastern in the loss.

The Huskies, who fall to 0-4-0 on the season, will meet with the Friars again on Saturday, when the teams travel to Boston for a 2 p.m. matchup at Matthews Arena. The game is part of Northeastern's annual Homecoming Weekend.
