The No. 3 New Hampshire Wildcats scored 45 seconds into the first period and never looked back on Friday night, defeating the Northeastern women's hockey team, 7-2, on Friday night at the Whittemore Center in Durham, N.H. Junior Nikki Petrich and freshman Ginny Berg scored goals for the Huskies, but the team was unable to overcome four first period goals by the Wildcats.
UNH's Jackie Wedster started the scoring at the 45-second mark of the first period, pouncing on an open rebound in front of NU junior goaltender Sarah Belliveau and notching her first goal of the season. The home team scored three more times in the opening 20 minutes of play, as the Wildcats outshot the Huskies, 24-1, in the first period.
Northeastern was more competitive in the second period, scoring two goals and outshooting New Hampshire, 13-12. Freshman Annie Hogan scored her third goal of the season 1:54 into the second period with an assist by senior Jessica Coppney. After the Wildcats scored three more second-period tallies, junior Nikki Petrich capped the scoring with her fourth goal of the season, a power-play tally, at the 18:54 mark of the second.
New Hampshire outshot Northeastern, 15-3, in the third period, but Belliveau stopped all 15 shots to keep the Wildcats at seven goals.
For the game, Belliveau faced 51 shots, making a career-high 44 saves. Both the shots allowed and saves made are season-highs for the Huskies. UNH's Melissa Bourdon made 15 saves in earning the victory, including 11 in the second period.
The Huskies and Wildcats will be back in action tomorrow afternoon, when the two teams meet again at the Whittemore Center beginning at 2 p.m.
