No. 3 New Hampshire received two goals each from Angela Taylor and Jennifer Hitchcock as the host Wildcats (12-1-1, 5-1-0 Hockey East) defeated the Northeastern women's hockey team (2-10-1, 1-6-1 Hockey East) by a score of 5-1 on Saturday afternoon at the Whittemore Center in Durham, N.H.
The Wildcats exerted control over the Huskies from the opening face-off, earning a 13-4 edge in shots in the first period. New Hampshire's Kelly Paton initiated the scoring at the 11:01 mark with a shorthanded tally, getting an assist from Sam Faber. The Huskies answered back just 1:21 later, however, as junior Nikki Petrich notched her second power-play goal in two games with a goal at the 12:22 mark. The assist on the goal went to senior assistant captain Crystal Rochon.
UNH regained its lead for good a few minutes later. Just three seconds after NU freshman defender Julia Clark stepped out of the penalty box, Taylor scored her first of the game and third of the season with 3:40 remaining in the opening period.
In the final two periods, the UNH advantage became more pronounced, as the Wildcats outshot NU, 27-4, including a 13-1 edge in the third period. Hitchcock scored both of her goals within a span of 2:56 towards the end of the second period, while Taylor completed the scoring with 2:09 remaining in the third period.
Northeastern junior netminder Sarah Belliveau completed a very busy two-game series by making 35 saves on 40 shots. In the two games, Belliveau turned away 79 UNH shots to keep her team in the games. New Hampshire's Brittany Busa got the start in net for the Wildcats, and was only forced to make seven saves on eight shots.
With the loss, NU completes its season-high six-game road trip, on which the Huskies went 1-4-1. The team briefly returns to Matthews Arena on Sat., Nov. 25 for a non-conference tilt with Yale on Saturday at 2 p.m. in Boston.
