Freshmen Chelsey Jones and Annie Hogan tallied goals for the Huskies, but it was not enough as the NU women's hockey team (2-12-1, 1-7-1 Hockey East) dropped a 7-2 contest to the host Maine Black Bears (6-7-2, 1-4-2 Hockey East) on Saturday afternoon at Alfond Arena in Orono, Maine. Maine was led by Sonia Corriveau and Vanessa Vani, who combined for four goals and three assists.
The visiting Huskies played well in the opening period, scoring the game's first goal at the 6:11 mark. Hogan notched her fourth tally of the season off of assists from seniors Jessica Coppney and Marie Desrosiers. The Black Bears came back just over 10 minutes later, however, as Corriveau notched her first goal of the game at 16:25 of the first period. Vani and Robyn Law recorded assists.
The second period saw the Black Bears outshoot the Huskies by a 15-5 margin and outscore NU by three goals. Law and teammate Brigitte Laflamme scored even-strength goals 27 seconds apart early in the second period to give the hosts a 3-1 advantage, and Corriveau struck again at the 6:08 mark to increase the lead.
Jones continued her stellar first season with the Huskies later in the period, taking a pass from sophomore Brenna Frost and beating Maine goaltender Rachel Gettings. The goal, Jones' fourth power-play tally of the season, also gave Frost her first collegiate point.
Corriveau came right back, however, completing her hat trick just over a minute later. Vani and Pam Patterson added third period goals for the Black Bears.
Jones' power-play goal marked the ninth time in the last 10 games that the Huskies have scored at least one power-play tally. The Huskies also held Maine scoreless on three power-play opportunities.
Junior Sarah Belliveau made 25 saves for the Huskies, while Gettings stopped 15 pucks for Maine.
The Huskies and Black Bears will return to the ice tomorrow at noon, for a Sunday afternoon contest at Alfond Arena.
