Freshman Chelsey Jones recorded a career-high five points and junior Nikki Petrich added two goals and an assist as the NU women's hockey team (3-12-1, 2-7-1 Hockey East) emphatically snapped Maine's seven-game unbeaten streak with a 6-2 victory on Sunday afternoon at Alfond Arena in Orono, Maine. Jones recorded her first career hat trick in the victory, and her five points were the most by a Husky since Brooke Whitney had five points on Jan. 27, 2002 against Wayne State.

Maine had the upper hand on the scoreboard in the opening period, despite being outshot by Northeastern, 9-4. Jenna Ouelette and Brigitte Laflamme notched power-play tallies for Maine in the first period, but a power-play tally by Jones sandwiched between the Black Bear goals kept the Huskies in the game early. Jones' goal came off of assists by classmates Lindsay Berman and Ginny Berg.

The second period belonged to the Huskies, as the visitors scored five goals to put the game away. Sophomore Erin Reil began the onslaught at the 4:54 mark of the second, taking passes from freshman Liz Chapman and senior Crystal Rochon and beating Maine goaltender Genevieve Turgeon. Chapman, who was playing in her first collegiate game for the Huskies, recorded her first career assist on the goal.

Later in the period, Jones scored twice more to record NU's first hat trick since current senior Amy Goodney scored three times against Ohio State on Nov. 14, 2004. Assists on the second goal went to Petrich and Rochon, while Berg recorded the only assist on Jones' third tally.

With the Huskies holding a 4-1 lead, Petrich then scored twice in the final 4:11 of the second period to essentially put the game away early. Jones assisted on both of Petrich's tallies, while Goodney notched her eighth assist of the season on the Husky junior's first goal of the afternoon. Petrich's second tally also marked the second time this season that NU had scored five unanswered goals against Maine, with the first coming on Oct. 22 in Boston.

The six goals were more than enough for NU junior netminder Sarah Belliveau, who made 18 saves - including only six stops in the first two periods - in earning her third victory of the season. Turgeon allowed five goals on 17 shots before being pulled in favor of Rachel Gettings, who allowed NU's sixth and final goal of the game.

With the victory, the Huskies leap back over Maine in the Hockey East standings. The team will look to continue the momentum from Sunday's victory when the team hosts No. 9/10 Boston College on Saturday, Dec. 9 at 2 p.m. at Matthews Arena in the team's final game before winter break.
