Meghan Fardelmann scored two of Boston College’s five second period goals as the visiting Eagles (11-4-4, 6-3-0 Hockey East) defeated Northeastern (3-13-1, 2-8-1 Hockey East) at Matthews Arena on Saturday afternoon.

Boston College controlled play for much of the opening period, striking first on the power play at the 9:48 mark. Deborah Spillane took the puck by the end boards and fed a cross-ice pass to Becky Zavisza at the left point, who fired a shot to the far post, beating NU junior netminder Sarah Belliveau. Minutes later, Allie Thunstrom broke in from the right side on Belliveau, but the Husky goalie made a nice right pad save as Thunstrom went to the backhand.

The Huskies evened the score late in the period, however, scoring a goal with a two-man advantage. The Huskies recorded seven shots on its second power play of the game, and finally got one by BC goaltender Molly Schaus with time running down in the period. With Zavisza and Maggie Taverna in the box for the Eagles, freshman Lindsay Berman skated across the right circle and fed a pass across the crease to junior Nikki Petrich, who buried it into the open net for her eighth goal of the season. Amy Goodney also recorded an assist on the goal.

The Eagles struck quickly to regain the lead in the second period and continued to mount pressure on the Northeastern defense. Seconds after Taverna left the penalty box, Fardelmann threw a shot on goal that eluded Belliveau through the five-hole, giving the visitors a 2-1 lead only 58 seconds into the period. Less than four minutes later, Deb Spillane notched her sixth of the season, with assists going to Michelle Lombardi and Lindsay Wright.

Boston College tacked on three more goals in the second period to put the game away. Fardelmann tallied her second of the game and ninth of the season at the 7:37 mark, followed by Gabrielle Beaudry’s first career tally with under five minutes remaining in the second. Kelli Stack put an exclamation point on the period for the Eagles, notching her first career shorthanded tally to put her team up by five. Stack stole the puck from the Northeastern defender at the point and went shot high to the glove side of NU sophomore Stacey Scott, who replaced Belliveau after Fardelmann’s second tally.

For the game, Boston College held a 35-30 shot advantage and a 41-24 edge at the face-off dot. The Eagles outshot NU, 15-8, in the decisive second period. Schaus made 23 saves on 24 shots to earn the victory before ceding the net to Johanna Ellison for the final 13:37 of play. Belliveau took the loss for NU, saving nine of 13 shots, while Scott made 19 stops in 32:23 of action.

Northeastern will take nearly four weeks off to rest for Winter Break, returning to action on Jan. 5, 2007 as the Huskies welcome ECACHL foe Clarkson to Matthews Arena.
