BU’s Cara Hendry scored the eventual game-winning goal 6:14 into the third period on the power play as the host Terriers (13-7-2, 5-5-1 Hockey East) held off the Northeastern women’s hockey team (3-17-1, 2-10-1 Hockey East), 4-2, on Saturday afternoon at Walter Brown Arena. Freshman Chelsey Jones scored her first goal in four games for the Huskies in the final stanza, but NU could not tally the equalizer and the Terriers added an empty-net tally with 1:09 remaining to ice the game.

BU went into the third period with a 2-1 lead, and the period was evenly played, with back-and-forth action on both ends of the ice. The Huskies got the first good chance of the period, as junior Nikki Petrich and senior captain Amy Goodney broke in on a two-on-one rush. Petrich fed Goodney in front, but the captain could not bury the goal. Less than two minutes later, BU had a two-on-none in front of the Husky net after a defensive lapse, but sophomore netminder Stacey Scott made a huge glove save to keep the Huskies down by a single goal.

Hendry gave BU a two-goal edge at the 6:14 mark by converting a power-play goal from in close. However, Jones came back 2:17 later and brought the Huskies back to within one with a great individual effort. The Lake Elmo, Minn., native stole the puck from a BU defender on the back check, then took the puck into the offensive end and beat both a Terrier defender and BU netminder Melissa Haber with some nice stickhandling.

The Huskies continued to put pressure on the Terriers after Jones’ goal. Freshman Annie Hogan had a great shot to tie the game with three minutes left, as she took the puck from between the circles and rang a shot off the left post. NU continued to press, pulling Scott with 2:17 remaining. BU’s Nicki Wiart iced the game, however, with an empty-net goal with 1:09 left on the clock.

Northeastern outshot Boston University, 10-8, in the first period, but the Terriers scored twice to head into the first intermission with a 2-0 lead. BU began the scoring 66 seconds into the game, as Jonnie Bloemers took a shot from the side of the net that squeaked by Scott and just trickled over the goal line. BU extended its lead with seven seconds remaining on an abbreviated power play, as Erin Seman spun around in front of the net and backhanded the puck past NU sophomore goaltender Stacey Scott. Scott made six saves in the opening period.

The Huskies endured a questionable call late in the period, when freshman Ginny Berg was given a five-minute major for bodychecking with 2:02 remaining in the first. BU’s Nicki Wiart was going after a loose puck when she ran into Berg, who had stopped short of the end boards to retrieve the puck. Wiart then bounced off of Berg and into the boards. However, Scott stood tall for NU, making four saves in the final two minutes of the first period and turning back four more shots during the final three minutes of the extended power play.

After the penalty to Berg expired, the Huskies put pressure on the Terriers and came away with the period’s only goal. At the 7:33 mark, sophomore Ali Bielawski took a shot from between the circles that was saved by BU netminder Melissa Haber, but sophomore Cassie Sperry corralled the rebound and managed to find the back of the net through a crowd in front. The goal was Sperry’s third of the season.

The Huskies continued to mount pressure later in the period. The team had multiple shots on net late in the period, including an attempt by senior Marie Desrosiers at the 18:19 mark that deflected off Haber and then hit the right post but did not go in. The team received a five-on-three power play after the ensuing faceoff, but the Huskies could not notch the equalizer.

The Huskies complete their brief three-game road swing with a trip to Providence, R.I., to take on non-conference opponent Brown on Tuesday night at 7 p.m. before returning home for games against Providence and Robert Morris next weekend at Matthews Arena.
