Senior captain Amy Goodney scored her first goal of the season, but the Northeastern women’s hockey team could not prevail in a 4-1 loss to non-conference opponent Brown on Tuesday evening in Providence, R.I. Brown’s Hayley Moore and Andrea Hunter each scored twice and added two assists for a game-high four points for the home team.

The game began well for Northeastern, as the team began the game on the power play thanks to a pre-game violation by Brown. The Huskies could not convert with the man advantage, however, and the Bears scored their first goal of the game 51 seconds after the penalty expired, on the team’s first shot on net of the game by Hunter.

Brown continued to come out hot, scoring on two of its next three shots on goal to take a 3-0 lead into the first intermission. At the 6:32 mark, the Bears got a power-play goal from Moore to take a two-goal lead. On the team’s next shot, Hunter tallied her second goal of the game at the 8:46 mark. Despite the three-goal disadvantage, NU outshot the Bears, 9-7, in the period but the team mustered only two shots on its three first-period power plays.

Junior netminder Sarah Belliveau replaced sophomore Stacey Scott at the 8:46 mark of the first period, after Scott allowed three goals on four shots. Belliveau played very well for the Huskies for the remainder of the game, allowing only Moore’s power-play goal 12:17 into the second period. She made 23 saves over the final 51:14 of the game, while her counterpart, Brown’s Nicole Stock, also made 23 saves.

Goodney helped to avoid the shutout by notching her first goal of the season, an unassisted tally at the 10:55 mark of the third period.

The Huskies were hampered by poor special teams play against the Bears. Brown scored two goals on seven chances with the man advantage, while Northeastern could only manage four shots and no goals on five power-play opportunities.

The Huskies will return to the ice this weekend, as the team faces off with Hockey East opponent Providence on Saturday at 2 p.m. and CHA foe Robert Morris on Sunday at 2 p.m., with both games played at Matthews Arena. Saturday’s contest will be included in the women’s hockey team’s Alumni & Friends day, which will include a celebration of the NU 1997 ECAC Championship team during the second intermission.
