| 2006-07 Schedule/Results Robert Morris 3, Northeastern 2 (OT)
The Northeastern women’s hockey team (3-20-1) lost a heartbreaker on Sunday afternoon at Matthews Arena, falling in overtime to Robert Morris (9-13-2), 3-2, despite outshooting the Colonials by a 34-11 margin. RMU’s Jessica Riley scored her second goal of the game with 6.2 seconds remaining in the overtime period to win it for the Colonials. The home team outshot the visitors, 4-1, in the overtime period, but the Colonials’ one shot was a good one. Riley took a pass from teammate and twin sister Jordan Riley and sprinted through the slot area, putting the puck past Belliveau for the game-winner. Each team scored once in the third period to send the game into overtime. At the 4:22 mark, Jessica Riley scored her first of the game and of her career by picking up a loose puck at center ice and stickhandling by an NU defender. The Huskies came right back, however, as sophomore Erin Reil potted her fifth goal of the season 1:56 later in almost the same manner. Reil intercepted an RMU pass at the red line and skated in unchallenged against RMU goaltender Heather Rossi. The Huskies controlled play for much of the first period, outshooting the visitors by a 7-4 margin and generating numerous scoring opportunities in the Colonial end. Senior Marie Desrosiers had the first good scoring chance of the afternoon when she skated unopposed into the left circle, but her shot clanged off the near pipe 2:42 into the period. Less than a minute later, however, Robert Morris’ Maria Olausson broke out of her own zone with linemate Morgan Beikirch, taking a pass from Beikirch and beating NU junior goaltender Sarah Belliveau high for the game’s first goal. Northeastern put continuous pressure on Robert Morris in the second period, generating the period’s only goal and holding a decisive 13-1 shot advantage. Just under four minutes into the second, the Huskies finally broke through with their first goal. Freshman Liz Chapman took the puck from behind the Colonial net and curled in front of RMU’s Heather Rossi before getting a backhander by the netminder. The goal, the first of Chapman’s career, was assisted by sophomore Cassie Sperry. The Huskies did not relent after Chapman’s goal, but the team was unable to take the lead through the end of the second period. Senior Amy Goodney thought she had her second goal of the season at the 14:40 mark of the period, as she picked up a loose puck in front of Rossi and slid the puck off the right post and partially over the goal line. The goal light went on, but play continued after the puck was cleared off the line. The final score belied the flow of the game, as Northeastern outshot the Colonials by a 23-shot margin, including the Huskies’ 13 shots in the second period alone. The major key for Robert Morris was its defensive presence, as the Colonials blocked an incredible 31 shots in the game. Rossi still came up big for RMU, making 32 saves to earn the win. Belliveau made eight saves for NU in a losing effort. The Huskies will return to action next weekend, when the team gets back into Hockey East play with a home-and-home series with Connecticut. The Huskies and Huskies will battle in Storrs, Conn., on Saturday at 1 p.m. before returning to Matthews Arena on Sunday at 2 p.m. for the season series finale between the two squads.
