Connecticut (13-10-2, 8-4-1 Hockey East) used three third-period goals to break a 1-1 tie and defeat the Northeastern women’s hockey team (3-21-1, 2-12-1 Hockey East), 4-1, on Saturday afternoon at the Freitas Ice Forum in Storrs, Conn. Freshman Sydney Arbelbide made her third career start for Northeastern and made 34 saves, while classmate Ginny Berg scored her first collegiate goal in the second period.
UConn’s Dominique Thibault scored the game-winner for the home team 2:48 into the third period, taking passes from Nicole Tritter and Leslie Hurlburt and getting the puck past Arbelbide. Connecticut added two more goals, including an empty-net goal with 40 seconds remaining, later in the period.
After a scoreless first period, the teams swapped goals 1:50 apart to head into the third tied at one. Connecticut got on the board first 10:29 into the second period, as Tritter took a pass from Thibault and beat Arbelbide.
Northeastern came right back less than two minutes later, however, to tie the game at one after 40 minutes of play. Freshman Ginny Berg notched her first tally of the season at the 12:19 mark, with senior Crystal Rochon recording the assist. The goal, the first of Berg’s career, made her the 18th different NU player to record at least one goal this season.
Northeastern and Connecticut will return to the ice again tomorrow afternoon, when the Huskies and Huskies return to Boston for a 2 p.m. faceoff at Matthews Arena. The game will be the first of eight consecutive games in Boston to end the Huskies’ 2006-07 season.
