The Northeastern women’s hockey team (3-23-2) played very well in the opening two periods, but Boston University (16-9-3) scored the final four goals of the game to take a 4-2 decision over the Huskies on Tuesday night in the opening round of the 29th Annual Women’s Beanpot Tournament at Conte Forum.

For the second consecutive game against the Huskies, BU played strong and scored the only goals of the third period. Only 1:20 into the period and with the teams playing four a side, Melissa Anderson won a face off in the NU zone and continued right to the net before feeding a wide-open Gina Kearns for the goal, knotting the game at two. Then, at the 14:13 mark, Erin Seman notched her 15th goal of the season to put the Terriers ahead. After Sarah Appleton took a shot from the blue line Seman picked up the loose carom and beat NU freshman goalie Sydney Arbelbide high to the blocker side.

The Huskies had a great opportunity late in the period. After Arbelbide was pulled with 1:46 remaining, Anderson was called for body-checking with 1:13 left in the final period. However, the Terriers took control of the ensuing faceoff and Julie Poulin sent the puck the length of the ice and into the vacated net at the 18:53 mark of the third, securing the win for the Terriers.

The Huskies came out very strongly against BU in the opening period, much like they did in Saturday’s contest. The Huskies opened up an 11-6 shot advantage and generated many of the period’s good scoring opportunities. The persistance paid off as NU scored both of the stanza’s two goals.

Only 2:47 into the opening period, sophomore Missy Elumba came in down the left side of the ice on a two-on-one break with senior Ashley Bielawski. Elumba elected to fire the puck on net, and her shot deflected off the shoulder of BU netminder Allyse Wilcox and straight up into the air. Luckily for the Huskies, the puck dropped behind Wilcox and into the back of the net for the game’s first goal, Elumba’s second of the season.

Soon after, the Huskies endured a two-minute tripping penalty to freshman Katy Applin at 4:00 and added to their lead just as the penalty expired. With a loose puck at center ice, junior Nikki Petrich barely got the puck past the last Terrier defender and skated in alone on Wilcox. The BU netminder made a nice right pad save on Petrich’s effort, but senior captain Amy Goodney swooped in and put the rebound past Wilcox at 6:01 for her second tally in two games against the Terriers.

Boston University had its chances in the period but could not score. Applin’s tripping call came when she made a diving attempt to stop Seman, who had a potential breakaway attempt. Applin did not allow a shot, however, and BU could not score on the ensuing power play. Northeastern killed off two more penalties in the opening period and went into the first intermission with a two-goal advantage, only the second time this season that NU has led by more than one goal after 20 minutes.

Northeastern held a 10-3 shot edge in the middle frame, but BU came back to get the only score of the period at the 8:13 mark with the man advantage. Twenty-one seconds after sophomore Colleen Sanborn entered the box for hooking, Cara Hendry fought in front of the NU net and redirected a Jonnie Bloemers shot from the high slot past Arbelbide. Appleton also recorded an assist on the goal.

Arbelbide finished the game with 14 saves, while Wilcox stopped 28 shots for BU. The Huskies held a decisive 30-18 edge in shots, but couldn’t score on any of their 19 shots over the final two periods.

Northeastern will return to the ice on Saturday afternoon, when the Huskies welcome No. 4/5 New Hampshire to Matthews Arena for a 2 p.m. opening faceoff. NU will play the loser of tonight’s Boston College-Harvard matchup in the Beanpot Tournament consolation game on Tuesday, Feb. 13 at 5 p.m. at Conte Forum.
