No. 6 Harvard (19-6-2, 5-4-1 ECAC Hockey League) defeated the Northeastern women’s hockey team (3-25-2, 2-14-2 Hockey East) by a score of 8-0 in the consolation game of the 29th Annual Women’s Beanpot Tournament, held on Tuesday night at BC's Conte Forum. Junior goaltender Sarah Belliveau made 14 saves for the Huskies before ceding the net to freshman Sydney Arbelbide, who stopped 21 of 24 shots over the final 35:02.
Northeastern held its own in the opening period, but Harvard took advantage of its opportunities to take a 3-0 lead heading into the first intermission, thanks to three goals from the team's top line. Sarah Wilson began the scoring at the 2:16 mark, taking a feed from Sarah Vaillancourt on a two-on-none break and beating Belliveau at the left post. Just over seven minutes later, Vaillancourt sat in the same position and was on the receiving end of a Julie Chu pass on a two-on-one rush. Later, at the 18:24 mark and with NU freshman Ginny Berg in the box for bodychecking, Chu scored after gathering a rebound of a Wilson attempt and beating a prone Belliveau.
Harvard scored three more times in the second period. Wilson recorded her second goal of the game with a slapshot from the right circle and Laura Brady ended Belliveau’s evening by capitalizing on a loose puck in front of the NU net after multiple point-blank saves from Belliveau. Vaillancourt then notched her second at the 11:39 mark of the middle frame on the man advantage.
Arbelbide played well for NU in the third period, stopping 14 shots and allowing only two goals. The Husky offense, however, was unable to get a shot past Harvard netminder Brittany Martin, who finished with 14 saves.
Northeastern will return to conference play this weekend, as the Huskies complete the home portion of their 2006-07 schedule with two games against Vermont at Matthews Arena. The Huskies and Catamounts will begin the weekend on Saturday night at 7 p.m., while the team will celebrate its five-member senior class on Senior Day during Sunday’s game beginning at 3 p.m.
