The women's hockey team played perhaps its best first period on Saturday, but could not overcome a three-goal second period for Connecticut and lost by a final score of 5-3. Lindsay Berman, Kristi Kehoe and Nikki Petrich all scored for Northeastern, while Dominique Thibault scored twice for Connecticut. Jody Sydor scored the game-winner for UConn.
Northeastern got on the board first for the second game in a row when Berman grabbed a deflection from her own shot and put it past Connecticut goalie Brittany Wilson for the first goal of the game, her second of the season. Erin Reil earned the assist on the play, after passing the puck to Berman from behind the net.
Connecticut responded with the game-tying goal four minutes later when Thibault herself gained possession of her own deflection and dumped the puck past NU goalie Leah Sulyma for her seventh tally of the season.
The second period started off with two goals from Cconnecticut. Brianna Uliasz got her first of the season at 7:26 in the second. The goal was unassisted.
Seconds afer Connecticut's second goal, Northeastern's Ginny Berg was called for cross-checking and sent Connecticut on a powerplay. UConn took advantage as Nicole Tritter added a goal of her own with help from Jaclyn Hawkins and Thibault at 8:38.
Two minutes later, Connecticut's Amy Hollstein was called for interference, giving Northeastern a powerplay opportunity which it converted. Kehoe earned her fourth goal of the season as Nikki Petrich and Lindsay Berman registered the assists on the play.
Connecticut responded with the game-winner seconds before the end of the period. Jody Sydor recorded her second goal of the season off an assist from Jaclyn Hawkins, making the score 4-3 in favor of Connecticut. Hawkins ended the game with three assists in the contest.
Connecticut padded its lead in the third period when Thibault got her second goal of the game. Cristin Allen won a faceoff in Connecticut's defensive zone and Hawkins collected the puck. She sent it down the boards to Thibault who ran away with it, adding the insurance goal for Connecticut.
Northeastern did not give up and Nikki Petrich added a goal with six seconds left in the game. The goal was Petrich's team-leading sixth on the season. Katy Applin had the assist on the play, her fourth of the season.
With the loss, Northeastern drops to 0-5-1 and 0-1-0 in Hockey East play. Up next, the Huskies take on the Rensselaer Engineers in Troy, N.Y., next Saturday at 7 p.m.
