The Huskies fell 1-0 in overtime to Yale on Friday in New Haven, Conn. Despite the loss, freshman goaltender Leah Sulyma was the star of the game, making 43 saves in regulation and four in overtime for a new career-high 47 stops. Maggie Westfall scored the game-winner for Yale, who have now won three-straight games against the Huskies.
Although being outshot 14-4 in the first, and 8-6 in the second, the Huskies entered into the third period in a scoreless tie with the Bulldogs, due to the play of Sulyma. In the third, it looked as though Yale would shoot ahead but the Huskies killed off three penalties, including a huge 5-on-3, and Sulyma made 21 saves in the period to keep the score even, sending the game into overtime. Overall the Huskies were outshot 43-14 in regulation.
Things remained the same in overtime until the final minutes, but Ginny Berg was called for holding, setting up the Bulldogs with a 5-on-4 to close out the game. With six seconds left, Westfall was finally able to put the puck past Sulyma during a scramble for the 1-0 win. It marked the first powerplay goal surrendered by the Huskies in their last four four games.
Today's game was the second overtime appearance for the Huskies who also scored a 2-2, overtime tie with North Dakota on Oct. 6. The game also marks Sulyma's second 40+ save game this season, and her third straight 30+ save performance (fifth overall).
The loss drops Northeastern to 4-11-1 on the season. The team will look to rebound on Sunday when it hosts Brown at Matthews Arena at 2 p.m.
