The Northeastern Huskies fell to Hockey East foe New Hampshire by a score of 8-2 on Saturday at the Whittemore Center at Durham, N.H. Four Wildcats had two-goal games, but the Huskies avoided being completely shutout with two third-period goals. New Hampshire wins the season series 3-0. The Wildcats jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the first period. Jenn Wakefield notched her 13th goal of the season, assisted by Sam Faber, at 07:59 and Jennifer Hitchcock followed it up with her 12th tally, assisted by Sadie Wright-Ward and Leah Craig, at 12:16. At 13:56 Colleen Sanborn was called for obstruction hooking, giving UNH the first powerplay of the game, but the Huskies were able to kill the penalty without further damage. New Hampshire then added two more goals at 17:25 and 17:40. Kacey Bellamy scored her first of the season, with Hitchcock and Ward assisting, and Sam Faber added her 18th to give the Wildcats a 4-0 lead at the end of one. The Huskies did come close to finding the net but Kristi Kehoe’s shot his the post. Freshman goaltender Leah Sulyma managed 16 saves in the tough first period, in which Northeastern was outshot 20-1 , but was replaced by junior Stacey Scott to start the second. New Hampshire continued the attack and added two more goals from Micaela Long and another by Wakefield to make it 6-0. The Wildcats tacked on one more, just before the end of the period as Hitchcock scored her second of the game, her 13th overall. The Huskies did avoid being completely shut out by UNH in the season’s series, as Chelsey Jones scored her eighth goal of the season at 02:13 in the third. She was assisted by freshman Kristi Kehoe, who now leads the Huskies with 10 assists and 18 points, and Colleen Sanborn. But just as quickly as NU scored, New Hampshire put one more up on the board as Micaela Long got her second of the game at 04:56, becoming the third Wildcat to score twice in the game. Showing heart, Northeastern posted another goal within the last two minutes. Sophomore Liz Chapman scored her first goal of the season, assisted by Annie Hogan and Cassie Sperry. The loss drops the Huskies to 5-15-2 and 4-7-0 in Hockey East play. The game also ends Sulyma’s streak of eight straight games with 30+ saves, which tied a school record. Scott finished with 19 saves in two periods of work. Chelsey Jones finished with a team-high three shots on goal, as did Katy Applin. Kristi Kehoe posted two shots as well. Up next, the Huskies will take on the Connecticut Huskies to begin a home-and-home series on Feb. 1, at the Freitas Ice Forum in Storrs, CT.
