Northeastern took an 8-1 loss to Boston University in the Huskies' regular season finale Sunday at Walter Brown Arena. Lindsay Berman scored for the Huskies, but Northeastern gave up four goals in the first, and could not recover.
Boston University put pressure on Northeastern starting early on in the first period, jumping on some early NU miscues and turning them into extra posessions and good shots on net. This early pressure paid off at 3:48 in the period, when BU's Jillian Kirchner jumped on a loose puck in front of NU's goal and slotted it low past Sulyma.
BU struck again four minutes later, during an NU power-play. The Terriers intercepted a pass in Northeastern's attacking zone, played the puck ahead, and skated in on Leah Sulyma on an odd-man rush. Jenelle Kohanchuk found Gina Kearns, who potted BU's second goal of the game.
Northeastern began to establish some momentum on a power-play midway through the period. The Huskies got two strong shots through traffic in front of the net, and almost punched in a loose puck in the crease before BU goalie Allyse Wilcox could cover it up. The Huskies kept up the pressure on the opening faceoff, and it paid off when Kristi Kehoe got a stick on the rebound from Lindsay Berman's shot from the point, and stuffed the puck home to get Northeastern off the mark.
The goal for Northeastern did little to slow BU's momentum: the Terriers outshot Northeastern 19-6 in the first period, and came back at Northeastern with two goals in the last minute of the frame. Tara Watchorn scred the first, skating from the right circle into the slot and lifting a wrist shot over Sulyma's left shoulder. Melissa Anderson potted the other with just 3 seconds left to play in the first, taking a pass across the goalmouth and firing a one-timer past Sulyma.
Florence Schelling took over for Sulyma in the second period, and the Huskies starting playing BU much tighter, limiting their shooting on defense, and generating more good looks on the offensive end. Scelling made two great saves midway through the period, and Kasey Cedorchuk almost beat Wilcox with a blast from the slot just moments later.
Boston University scored again with 2:37 left to play in the period, when Erin Seman beat Schelling from short range in front of the net. The Terriers added a sixth goal with 1:07 left when Melissa Anderson slotted a pass through traffic in the slot, and found Lauren Cherewyk, who put it away.
The Huskies struggled early in the third period as well. As BU's Nicki Wiart skated in on goal, Schelling moved to her right to cut down the angle. Katy Applin dove in to try to break up the play, but her stick knocked the puck past Schelling, giving BU its seventh goal of the game. The Terriers added another goal tree minutes later, with Sarah Russell doing the damage off of an assist from Caroline Bourdeau.
Despite the loss, Northeastern finishes the regular season in sixth place, qualifying for the Hockey East playoffs. The Huskies will play their quarterfinal matchup against Boston University, who clinched a third-place finish with the win and New Hampshire's victory over Connecticut. Northeastern will travel to Walter Brown Arena Sat. Feb. 28 for a 3 p.m. game
