Northeastern improved to 8-8-2 (5-4-0 HEA) with a 2-0 win over the No. 9 Boston University Terriers Thursday night at the Terriers' Walter Brown Arena. The win is Northeastern's second victory over a top-10 team, after downing then-number 10 Connecticut Oct 19.

Northeastern jumped out to an early lead when Lindsay Berman fired a shot from the left point that found its way through traffic and into the back of the net just 48 seconds into the game. It was the first time that the Huskies struck first since Dec. 6 when Kristi Kehoe scored the first NU goal in a 2-1 win over Vermont.

Boston University saw the first power play opportunity of the game after a roughing call on Autumn Prouty at 3:29. The Huskies' penalty kill, which has played well all season, performed well again, and kept the Terriers off the board. Leah Sulyma made two good saves on hard shots from the point to preserve the Huskies' lead.

The first period was played at a brisk pace, with each team pressing the attack and quickly moving the puck from end to end. As a result of this quick tempo, the Huskies committed a number of turnovers in their own zone, but Boston University was not able to turn the added posessions in to many quality scoring chances.
The Terriers' best chance of the period came on a two-on-one rush with 12:30 remaining. Ginny Berg, seeing action for the first time this season, made a great play to disrupt the fast break, hitting the ice to knock the puck away from the onrushing BU forwards.

Northeastern got its first man-up opportunity at 13:34 when Jenelle Kohanchuck was whistled for roughing. The best scoring opportunity of the power play came when Alyssa Wohlfeiler threaded a pass through traffic from behind the net to Stephanie Gavronsky, but Gavronsky could not redirect the puck on net.

A turnover in the Northeastern zone almost gave BU the equalizer, when Erin Seman found herself with an open shot from point-blank range, but Sulyma came up with a big save to keep the Huskies in front. BU had another great opportunity to tie the game late in the period when Lauren Cherewyk saw a similar opportunity for an open shot from close range, but Sulyma was there again, and made the save with her right pad. Seconds later, Stephanie Gavronsky cleared the zone, and Missy Elumba hustled down the ice after the puck, forcing Terrier goalie Allyse Wilcox to come out of the crease to play the puck, tripping Elumba up in the process. Wilcox was whisteld for interference, giving the Huskies their second power play opportunity of the night, but they could not capitalize.

The Huskies pressed the offensive early in the second period, and almost added to their lead, when Lori Antflick got onto the end of a rebound right in front of the net, but she could not beat Wilcox, and the score remained 1-0. The Huskies did not sit back to preserve their lead, but rather kept up the offensive pressure, outshooting the Terriers 9-7 in the second frame.

NU fore-checked aggressively in the middle portion of the period, keeping the puck pinned in the BU zone, and drew a hooking penalty from Erin Seman as a result of the sustained offensive pressure.

BU's best chance of the period came when Terrier captain Gina Kearns picked up a loose puck in the NU zone. She skated in on Sulyma unchallenged, but put a shot over the crossbar. Sulyma was tested again shortly thereafter, when some crisp passing from BU drew the defense out of position, then found an unmarked Terrier wide open on the opposte post. Sulyma quickly recovered, and got in position to make two quick saves.

NU's second goal came when Katy Applin sent a pass from the defensive zone that found Annie Hogan behind the defense. Hogan carried the puck strong to the net, drew the lone BU defender, and then sent a pass to Lori Antflick, who was trailing the play in the slot. Antflick beat Wilcox to the right side for her second goal of the season, and extended Northeastern's lead to two.

Entering the third period with a 2-0 lead, Northeastern immediately weathered a storm of offensive pressure from Boston Unviersity. The Terriers kept the puck in NU's zone for most of the first five minutes of the period, but the NU defensemen did a good job of clogging the lanes and blocking shots, and Sulyma made a handful of nice saves.

The Huskies were further tested on the penalty kill when Kristi Kehoe hit the ice to block a big slap-shot from the point, and Northeastern managed to clear the puck, and kill the power play.

Northeastern sufered a scare when Kehoe took a big hit at center ice, and was slow to get up, but she would return to the ice minutes later. BU's Tara Watchorn was whistled for body checking, but the ensuing power play was cut short when Lori antflick was called for hooking.

A tripping call on Kasey Cedorchuk with 3:55 left gave BU a great opportunity to get back in it. The Terriers pulled Wilcox midway through the man advantage, and came within inches of scoring a number of times. The first came when a bouncing puck found its way to Kearns right in front of the net, but Sulyma stuffed two quick shots with her left pad. Seconds later, Sarah Russell sent a shot ringing off the post. On the Terriers' next posession, Melissa Anderson sent a rocket of a shot towards the top right corner, but Sulyma got the tip of her glove on it, pushing it safely wide. The Huskies held on for the remaining seconds despite the extra attacker, and secured the win.

The victory was Northeastern's second over a ranked opponent, and the shutout is Sulyma's third in nine starts. With the win, the Huskies also surpass their win total from last season.
