NU ties Maine, loses shootout
Jan. 31, 2009
Alfond Arena (Orono, Maine)

Team 1st 2nd 3rd OT Final
Northeastern (10-13-3, 5-9-1) 1 1 0 0 2
Maine (5-19-3, 2-11-2 HEA) 1 1 0 0 2

Northeastern played to a 2-2 tie with Maine Saturday night at the Black Bears' Alfond Arena. Maine won the shootout to earn an extra point in the Hockey East standings. Northeastern now sits at 10-13-3 (5-9-1 HEA) and Maine at 5(1)-19-3 (3(1)-11-1 HEA).

Maine jumped out to an early lead when Jenni Gallo scored just 20 seconds into the first period. The goal was Gallo's team-leading 10th, and it was her fourth point of the weekend, after tallying three assists in Friday night's 4-2 win.

Northeastern dominated play for the rest of the period, ultimately outshooting Maine 14-5 in the frame. Maine got the first power-play opportunity midway through the period, but Northeastern's penalty kill rebounded well after surrendering two power-play goals to the Black Bears Friday night, and killed the man-advantage.

Northeastern continued applying the offensive pressure after escapig the man-down situation, and it paid dividends in the form of a Katy Applin goal. The equalizing goal was Applin's third of the season, and her second in two nights.
Northeastern got a chance on the power play later in the period, and another as the period ended, but could not capitalize on either, and the two teams went into the locker room tied at one.

Maine's Vanessa Vani broke the tie at 5:23 in the second period, scoring her second goal of the weekend, and her sixth of the season. Northeastern continued to dominate play, surviving another Maine power play and again outshooting the Black Bears in the period. The Huskies eventually found the equalizer on the man-advantage, when Lindsay Berman found the net off an assist from Stephanie Gavronsky. At the second intermission, the Huskies held a 27-15 shot advantage, but could not turn it into a lead.

The third period was a back-and-forth affair, with each team getting its chances on the man-advantage, Northeastern outshot Maine in the third period, but could not find the go-ahead goal, and the game went into overtime. The Huskies managed four shots in the extra frame to Maine's two, but could not beat Maine's Genevieve Turgeaon, who made 37 saves on the night.

The two teams proceeded to a shootout, as is now prescribed by Hockey East rules. Kristi Kehoe's effort was saved by Turgeon, and Myriam Croussette almost gave Maine an early lead in the shootout, but her shot rang the pipe. Ali Bielawski and Jenne Ouellette both failed to convert, and in the third round, Northeastern's Alyssa Wohlfeiler missed, while Maine's Elyce Thomas converted to give Maine the shootout win and an extra point in the Hockey East standings.
