Northeastern was even with Boston College entering the third period, but surrendered two goals and wound up on the losing end of a 3-1 decision in the opening round of the Women's Beanpot Tuesday at Matthews Arena.
Boston College struck first at 2:38 in the first period. Allie Thunstrom carried the puck into the NU zone on the left hand side, and fired a sharp pass across the goalmouth to Restuccia, who was crashing the right post. Restuccia got a stick on the puck and redirected it past Northeastern goalie Leah Sulyma. Thunstrom's assist on the goal was the junior's 100th career point.
Ali Bielawski brought Northeastern level again 36 seconds later, when she carried the puck around a Boston College defender on her backhand side, then lifted it over the shoulder of BC goalie Molly Schaus and into the back of the net. The goal is Bielawski's fifth of the season, matching her career high.
Northeastern forechecked agressively throughout the period, and the result was end-to-end play with each team seeing some good offensive opportunities.
Northeastern's most promising chance came when Missy Elumba skated in on Schaus while the Eagles netminder was out of the crease playing the puck. Elumba knocked it free and fired a quick shot on net, but the puck deflected off of Schaus's pad, and sailed high and wide of the net. Neither team managed another goal in the period, and the teams went into the locker room tied at one.
The second period unfolded much like the first, with neither team dominating play for long stretches, and each side getting its looks at the goal. Midway through the period, Northeastern looked to have taken the lead after the rebound from a Missy Elumba shot bounced into a crowd of players down low, and eventually found its way into the net. However, the referees ruled that the puck was played across the goal line illegaly, and the goal was disallowed. Northeastern came close to breaking the tie again minutes later, when Missy Elumba took a feed in the slot and fired a short-range slap shot at Schaus, but the Eagles' goalie was in position and made the save. A minute latyer Alyssa Wohlfeielr skated in ona breakaway, and deked past Schaus, but could not get her stick back on the puck to get it on net.
Boston College had a quality scoring opportunity later in the period when a backhand found its way towards the unguarded back post, but Sulyma made a sprawling save with her left pad to push the puck clear.
Boston College took the lead in the third period when Kelli Stack got a hold of the puck at NU's blue line. Stack hustled to control the puck inside the zone, and was close to being offsides, but kept the puck in, and got the puck down low, where Danielle Welch potted the go-ahead goal.
BC added a third goal when Stack herself got on the board at 9:36 in the third. After Northeastern turned the puck over on the power play, Stack corralled the loose puck and started a two-on-two rush with Thunstrom. Stack dished the puck to the left, then quickly got it back from her line-mate and fired it in before Sulyma could take away the near post.
The Huskies struggled to get thier momentum back after the pair of BC goals, finding themselves outshot 16-4 in the third. They could not get on the board again.
The loss matches Northeastern up with Boston University, who took an 8-0 loss to Harvard in the other semifinal. The Terriers and Huskies will face off in the consolation game at 5 p.m. on Feb. 10, after which Boston College and Harvard will play in the Beanpot Championship at 8 p.m.
Northeastern drops to 10-14-3 (5-9-1 HEA) with the loss. The Huskies face Providence in a home-and-home series this weekend, playing at Matthews Arena Saturday night at 7 p.m.
