Florence Schelling made 38 saves for the Huskies, but Northeastern surrendered three goals to BU, losing 3-0 at Matthews Arena Saturday.
Today's game was the final home game for the Huskies in 2008-09, and the team celebrated Senior Day before the opening faceoff, honoring Ali Bielawski, Missy Elumba, Brenna Frost, Erin Reil, Colleen Sanborn, and Stacy Scott, the team's six seniors.
Northeastern was on the defensive early after a cross-checking call on Colleen Sanborn 17 seconds into the first. Boston University got a number of good looks at the net, but Northeastern escaped the man-down without giving up a goal.
BU kept up the momentum from the game-starting power play and sustained it through the period, outshooting the Huskies 14-7 in the period, and winning the posession battle as well.
The Terriers got the first big break of the game midway through the first period, when Gina Kearns got a stick on Kasey Boucher's shot from the point, deflecting the puck down. The puck bounced up and over Florence Schelling's glove to give BU a 1-0 lead.
Some great play from Schelling later in the period kept the lead to just one. An NU giveaway in the defensive zone gave BU a breakaway, but Schelling came up with the save. In the waning seconds of the first period, BU skated in on Schelling on a 2-on-1 break, but the pass to an open Terrier forward went astray, and Northeastern got out of the period down only one goal.
The second period was played much like the first. BU again leveraged advantages in posession and shots, but solid defensive play from Northeastern kept the Terriers off the board. Northeastern killed another BU power play after Stephanie Gavronsky was called for checking. Schelling helped the penalty kill unit with a great save at the 6:30 mark: after turning aside a shot from the point, Schelling quickly got from post-to-post to deny a second shot off of the rebound.
A late penalty on BU's Melissa Anderson gave the Huskies a power play to end the second period and start the third. Lindsay Berman almost tied things up during the five-on-four when she skated into the zone, and fired a shot off the right post. Berman's effort was the best chance NU would see on the power-play, and Anderson got back on the ice with BU still ahead by one.
Boston University added to its lead midway through the second, when Schelling's pad save of an Erin Seman shot sent the puck right to a waiting Jennelle Kohanchuk, who potted the rebound to put BU ahead 2-0.
Northeastern continued to push the attack, but could manage to get a puck past BU goalie Allyse Wilcox. A BU penalty at 18:03 in the period gave Northeastern a power-play to end the period, and the Huskies pulled Schelling down the stretch for a two skater advantage. However, BU managed to corral the puck, and Holly Lorms sent it into the empty net to give BU a 3-0 lead and seal the win.
Northeastern drops to 12-18-3 (7-12-1 HEA) with the loss, but remains in sixth place in Hockey East. The Huskies play at BU's Walter Brown Arena Sunday at 3 p.m.
