Schelling stymies Catamounts in 3-0 win
Oct. 30, 2009
Gutterson Fieldhouse (Burlington, Vt.)

Team 1st 2nd 3rd Final
Northeastern (6-1-1, 2-0-1-1 Hockey East) 3 0 0 3
Vermont (4-3-0, 0-1-0-0 Hockey East) 0 0 0 0

Sophomore Florence Schelling turned in her second shutout of the season, making 27 saves in a 3-0 Northeastern victory over Vermont on Friday night. Three of the Huskies' first four shots were goals, including junior Alyssa Wohlfeiler's game-winner just seven seconds into the game. Freshman Brittany Esposito scored her first collegiate goal and junior Kristi Kehoe added her fourth of the season.

The Huskies have now won three straight to improve to 6-1-1 overall and 2-0-1-1 in Hockey East. Northeastern remains in first place in the conference with six points, two clear of second-place Providence. With the loss, Vermont falls to 4-3 overall and 0-1-0-0 in Hockey East.

The crowd had barely settled into their seats when Wohlfeiler produced a stunning opener, pushing a rebound past UVM keeper Kristen Olychuck. Esposito and senior Annie Hogan were credited with assists, which they earned right off the opening faceoff. It was the fastest goal of Wohlfeiler's career.

Esposito lit the lamp on the Huskies' next shot just under seven minutes later. Defensemen Julia Marty and Kasey Cedorchuk chipped in assists on the goal, giving the Huskies some breathing room in the early stages of the game.

After surviving a Catamount power play, the Huskies struck again. Kehoe tickled the twine for the third straight game off a pass from senior tri-captain Katy Applin at 14:19 of the first period.

Kehoe now has at least a point in seven of the Huskies' eight games this season; the team is 6-0-1 when Kehoe figures on the scoresheet.

Vermont outshot the Huskies in every period, but could not solve Schelling, who produced another outstanding effort in net. Northeastern's netminder lowered her GAA to a jaw-dropping 0.85 after the game, good for the third-best mark in the nation. At the other end, Olychuck recovered after allowing three quick goals, stopping the Huskies' final nine shots.

Northeastern returns to action tomorrow for game two against the Catamounts in Burlington. The opening faceoff in set for 4 p.m.
