Esposito, Schelling subdue Catamounts again

Freshman Brittany Esposito's shorthanded goal with 6:32 remaining in
the third period pushed the Northeastern Huskies to a 1-0 victory over
Vermont at Gutterson Fieldhouse on Saturday. Sophomore Florence
Schelling posted her second consecutive shutout, making 15 saves on the
day. The Huskies have won four straight to improve to 7-1-1 overall,
and remain in first place in Hockey East with a 3-0-1-1 conference
mark.
Schelling now leads the nation in GAA (0.74) and save percentage (.970), while her three shutouts rank second nationally. She has not allowed a goal in over 145 minutes, dating back to the second period against Bemidji State on Oct. 23.
The Huskies' defense made life easier for Schelling, allowing no more than six shots in any period. As a unit, Northeastern has yet to allow more than
two goals in any game this season. The Huskies' eight goals allowed
through the first nine games is the best mark in the conference.
Esposito, who posted a goal and an assist last night, picked up her first-career shorthanded tally (and first game-winning goal) to propel the Huskies to their third one-goal win in their last four games. Esposito led all players with five shots on goal in the game.
Vermont keeper Kristen Olychuck also turned in a fine performance with 26 saves, a day after allowing three goals on the Huskies' first four shots.
The Huskies have not won seven of their first nine games since 2001-02, when the team started 10-0 and finished 27-7-1.
Northeastern returns to action on Nov. 8 at Providence at 2 p.m.
