The No. 9 Northeastern Huskies (9-2-2, 5-1-2-1 Hockey East) erased an early three-goal deficit to
defeat the Providence Friars (4-6-5, 3-3-3-2 Hockey East), 4-3 on Friday night at Schneider Arena.
Northeastern fell behind 3-0 in the first period, but rallied to tie
the score in the second frame on goals by Kristi Kehoe, Casey Pickett
and Kelly Wallace. Junior Alyssa Wohlfeiler then capped the comeback
with the game-winning goal in the third period.
The Huskies had not come from three goals down to win a game since Oct. 22, 2006 vs. Maine. In that game, Northeastern trailed 5-1 in the second period, before scoring five unanswered goals to prevail 6-5.
Providence took command of the game in the first period, jumping out to a 3-0 lead in the first 11:28 of the frame. Jessica Cohen opened the scoring with her fourth tally of the season at 4:33, before Nicole Anderson and Ashley Cottrell added power play goals to triple the Friars' advantage. In less than 12 minutes, Providence had accomplished something that no other Husky opponent had done this season: score three goals in a game.
Northeastern was unfazed.
On a late power play in the first period, Kehoe started the comeback with her sixth goal of the year at 18:23. Freshman Brittany Esposito and senior Katy Applin drew assists on the goal, which methodically started to tip the scales in the Huskies' favor.
Pickett registered her third goal of the season midway through the second period to cut the deficit to 3-2. Wohlfeiler and freshman Danielle Kerr were credited with the helpers; for Kerr it was her first collegiate point.
Just over seven minutes later, Northeastern evened the score as Wallace pushed an unassisted goal past Providence keeper Genevieve Lacasse at 17:47. It was Wallace's third goal in her first five games with the Huskies.
The momentum squarely in their corner, the Huskies went to work quickly in the final period. Taking a pass from junior Lori Antflick, freshman Rachel Llanes fed Wohlfeiler for her seventh goal of the season- and third game-winner in her last six games- to put NU ahead for the first time. Despite allowing three quick goals, Huskies' goaltender Florence Schelling held the fort the rest of the way to preserve her eighth victory of the season. The sophomore turned aside 24 pucks, while Lacasse recorded 25 stops for Providence.
The Huskies return to
the ice on Wednesday vs. Vermont at Matthews Arena at 3 p.m.
