Chanda Gunn has completed her second season as assistant coach of the women's hockey team. The two-time All-America goaltender coaches while continuing to pursue her international hockey career.
Thanks to her experience, the Huskies showed significant improvement in goaltending in 2007-08, as Gunn helped develop Hockey East All-Rookie goalie Leah Sulyma, who lowered NU's goals allowed average by over one from 2006-07 and finished 17th in the country with a .912 save percentage.
Gunn, a Huntington Beach, Calif., native, has been on the U.S. National team since 2002. She led Team USA to a gold medal at the 2005 IIHF Women’s World Championship and a bronze medal at the 2006 Winter Olympics in Torino, Italy, as well as a silver medal at the 2007 World Championship.
After transferring to Northeastern from the University of Wisconsin, Gunn spent three seasons writing her name all over the NU record books. In her junior season of 2002-03, Gunn posted a miniscule 1.37 goals against average, which ranked second in the country and third all-time at Northeastern, as well as a Husky-record .950 save percentage that led the nation. That season, Gunn was named a second-team All-American. In her senior season of 2003-04, Gunn once again led the nation with a .938 save percentage. She also posted a 2.06 GAA on her way to Hockey East Player of the Year and first-team All-America honors.
For her career, Gunn ranks first in NU history in career saves (2,447) and save percentage (.936) and holds single-season records for save percentage (.950) and wins (26). She graduated from Northeastern in 2004 with a bachelor’s degree in Athletic Training and a minor in Religious Studies.
