Head coach Laura Schuler has announced the signing of two highly-touted recruits who will join the 2008-09 Northeastern women’s ice hockey team, goaltender Florence Schelling and defenseman Sam Watt.

Schelling, from Oberengstringen, Switzerland, has been a member of the Swiss national team since the age of 13 and has been the team’s primary goalie since the age of 17. In 2006 she competed at the Winter Olympics in Torino, posting a 2.40 goals against average and a .939 save percentage in three appearances. She is a two-time Swiss Most Valuable Player, Swiss Woman of the Year in 2007, and the only female to ever play in the Swiss National Men’s League.

“Florence is a world-recognized athlete," says Schuler. “International coaches know that if their teams are going to get by the Swiss team, she’s the one they have to break.”

Watt, from Cremona, Alberta, is a member of the Calgary Oval X-Treme team of the Western Women’s Hockey League and has registered a 5-4-9 scoring line in 11 games this season with the X-Treme. Watt, whose brother J.D. plays for the Red Deer Rebels of the Western Hockey League and is a draft pick of the Calgary Flames, is also a member of the Alberta Under-18 team and was named Canada’s top defenseman at this year’s Canadian Under-18 National Championships. This week Watt was selected to the Canadian Under-18 National Team that will compete at the upcoming IIHF World Championships.

“Sam is a big, strong defenseman with a lot of poise and puck control,” comments Schuler. “She really knows how to control the play and fire the puck.”

“Both girls are going to be forces to be reckoned with at the national, international and collegiate levels. We’re excited to have both of them on board.”

The Huskies are currently 4-10-1 on the season, having recently defeated No. 9 Boston College, and have improved to 3-3-0 in Hockey East play. They resume action on Jan. 5, 2008 at Yale.
