Huskies receive All-New England honors

Three Husky oarswomen, sophomore Veronica Townsend and seniors Svenja Sanders and Colleen Saville, have been selected to the Collegiate Rowing Coaches Association (CRCA) All-New England teams.
Townsend was selected to the All-New England first team, while Sanders and Saville, made the second team.
Townsend, a native of Mays Landing, N.J., rowed the 6 seat in the varsity boat this year after rowing in the 4 seat in the second varsity boat during her freshman season. Before coming to Northeastern, she rowed 5 seat in varsity boat for four years at Oakcrest High and was selected to the U.S. Rowing Development Camp in 2006 and to the U.S. Rowing Selection Camp in 2007.
Sanders, of Essen, Germany, rowed the 4 seat in the varsity boat after rowing the varsity 3 seat for three straight years. Sanders came to NU after winning gold in the four without as a member of the German team at the 2004 Junior World Championship.
Saville, of Gansevoort, N.Y., served as co-captain this year with fellow senior Jillise Ketcham. Saville coxed the varsity boat at Northeastern for three years after transferring from Ohio State, where she coxed the varsity to the Big Ten Championship and a fifth-place finish at the NCAA Championship. She also won the Canadian Henley in the Junior four with in 2003.
Together, they led the Huskies to a 9-4 regular regatta season record, first-place at the inaugural CAA Championship and sixth-place at the EAWRC Sprints.
The awards recognize the outstanding performances of rowers and coxswains from each of the five regions. Nominated student-athletes are evaluated on the strength of their team’s regional finish, coaches’ recommendations and 2,000-meter erg score. Nominees must be eligible student-athletes who have competed in their teams’ varsity boat in 75 percent of races this season.
These athletes will be eligible for All-America awards selection following the NCAA Rowing Championships, which will be held May 29-31 on the Cooper River in Camden, N.J.
