Women’s rowing inks 10 recruits

The women’s rowing team has signed 10 recruits for the upcoming regatta season. The Class of 2013 includes rowers Anna Colavecchio, Abigail Crenshaw, Johanna Duff, Johann Evans, Kate Halbig, Lillian Nelson, Nadine Pozzobon and Jenna Stedman and coxswains Sarah McGovern and Marissa Demos.

Colavecchio, of Miami Fla., was a four-year varsity rower and swimmer at Kent. In 2006, she won a bronze medal in the V8+ at the 2006 NEIRAs and her V8+ finished fourth at the 2009 NEIRAs.

Crenshaw, a native of Charlotte, N.C., is the current captain of the Charlotte Youth Rowing program. Her crew finished first in the LW2x in 2007 at the Southeast Regionals before taking 14th at the program’s first-ever trip to USRowing Youth Nationals. In 2008, the team finished seventh in the same event and will compete at the 2009 Youth Nationals in the W4x after a second-place finish at Southeast Regionals earlier this spring.

Demos, from Duxbury, Mass., rowed from eighth grade until 10th grade at Duxbury High when she began coxing. “Marissa is a competitor to the core with strong leadership skills,” said coach Wilhelm. “Her experience as a rower has formed her into a skilled and successful coach within the boat.” Her V4+ boat won States in 2007.

Duff, of Huntingdon Valley, Pa., has rowed for Mount Saint Joseph's Academy for four years. Her freshman season she stroked her Freshman 8+ to a SRAA National Championship and the following year, she stroked the JV8+ to second at Stotesbury. She was part of the third-place Varsity 8+ boat at 2008 Head of the Charles, and her V8+ won the Philadelphia City Championship and placed third at Stotesbury and second at SRAA Nationals this spring.

Evans, a Wilmington, Del. native, won a bronze medal at the City Championships in the JV4+ in 2007 and competed in the JV4+ at Stotesbury in 2007.

Halbig, of Burnt Hills, N.Y., has been rowing for Burnt Hills High School for the past six years. She stroked the varsity eight boat, which won a bronze medal at the 2009 CSSRA Regatta and placed second at the 2009 NY State Championships and seventh at SRAs.

McGovern, from Bala Cynwyd, Pa., was the top boys’ coxswain for Episcopal Academy in Philadelphia. In 2008, she finished first in the men’s varsity 4+ Scholastic Nationals and placed fourth at Youth Nationals in Cincinnati. During the summers, she races a single and coxes for several men's club teams.

Nelson, a Willington, Conn. native, was a three-year varsity rower and served as team captain at E. O. Smith High School. She stroked her novice boat to an undefeated season and a 2009 CPSRA Championship in the V4+.

Pozzobon, from Niagara Falls, Ontario, has been rowing for four years for Saint Paul High School, Ridley Graduate Boat Club and St. Catharine’s Rowing Club. She finished second at the 2008 CSSRA in the Jr. Women’s 2x and third in both the Sr. W2- and Sr. W2x. Pozzobon also won the Women’s 4x at the 2008 CanAmEx and made the A Final at the 2008 Canadian Junior National Speed Orders. She has won the Ontario Ergometer Championships twice.

Stedman, of Hanover, N.H., was the captain of the rowing team at Hanover High, where she stroked the V8+ to a seventh-place finished at the 2009 NEIRA regatta. She won a bronze medal at the 2008 NEIRAs in the 2V8+ and a gold at NEMA

Head Coach Joe Wilhelm is confident that this class will add great depth and competitive experience to the current Husky squad.

“This incoming class will support our culture of being passionate about training and competing at the highest possible level, while adding depth and experience to a youthful squad that will only continue to get faster,” said Wilhelm.
