Glessner wins silver medal with US Women's eight team

Former Northeastern rowing star Katherine Glessner earned a silver medal with the U.S. Women’s eight team at the Lucerne Regatta in Switzerland this past weekend. The Seattle, Wash. native, who has never stroked before, was called on to stroke the eight for the U.S. after Susan Francia was sidelined due to illness.

“I had never stroked before so it was certainly a learning experience,” said Glessner. “[Coach]'s advice to me was to not think about the rhythm and just pull, so I did."

Despite a slow start, the team entered second place just before the 500m mark and did not look back. The 6:13.18 time posted by the U.S. was good enough to edge out the Netherlands 6:13.49 time but fell just short of the gold medal Romanians who clocked in at 6:10.76.

Glessner and the rest of the team will return to the states to prepare for the upcoming World Championships in Poznan, Poland this August.
