Gordon and Petta take CAA weekly honors
Nov. 2, 2009
Boston, Mass.
The women's soccer team has been awarded conference honors for the second week in a row, as sophomore goalkeeper Stephanie Gordon was named CAA Co-Player of the Week and freshman Devin Petta Rookie of the Week.
Gordon made a career-high 11 saves in the 4-0 victory over Hofstra on Saturday. It was her sixth shutout of the season, giving her a career total of 13, just one shy of tying the all-time record. Gordon made 10 stops against the Pride in the second half, including a diving save in the 55th minute to preserve the shutout. Gordon advanced to 12-2-2 with the win, the best regular season record of any goalkeeper in NU women's soccer history. She leads the CAA in save percentage (.875) and is second in saves (105).
Petta scored the game-winning goal and added an assist in Saturday's win over the Pride. She started off the Huskies in the 20th minute of the match, heading in a free kick from defender Kelly Matthews. Petta then assisted on a goal by Veronica Napoli just 31 seconds later, putting Northeastern up 2-0. The three points rose Petta's season total to 35, and the goal was her 14th of the season, which ties the Northeastern single-season record that Keri Irwin set in 1996. Petta's goal ended up being the game-winner, giving her seven this season.
Saturday's win clinched the Huskies the CAA regular-season title and home field advantage at this weekend's CAA tournament, which will be held at Parsons Field in Brookline, Mass. The first seed Huskies will host fourth seed James Madison in the semi-finals this Friday, Nov. 6, at 5:30 p.m. Tickets are available now.
