Northeastern women’s soccer earned their second win of the season by defeating Sacred Heart 2-1 on Friday. The team is now 2-2-0 on the season.
Sacred Heart grabbed the early lead with a Lisa Burbridge goal in the fortieth minute of play. It would be the only goal allowed by Husky goalie, Mariel Wilner.
Defenseman Laura Johnson tied it up four minutes later with her first goal of the season. Freshman forward Hanna Olsson was credited with the assist as her corner kick set up Johnson’s goal. At halftime the game was all tied up at 1-1.
It was Kristin Kowalik’s goal at 73:06 that proved to be the game winner. Senior midfielder Jackie Spellman had a break away towards the goal, then dished it off to Kowalik, who drew SHU’s goalie out of the net and poked the ball past her for a goal.
Goalie Ashley Mocarski stopped two Northeastern’s four shots on goal and Wilner made four saves on five shots. Mocarski is 1-3-0 on the season, while Wilner is 2-1-0 respectively.
The game was an intensely physical contest as the two teams had a combined 34 fouls. Olsson and Senior Katie Leahy also were given yellow cards.
As a result of the rough play, it was also a primarily defensive contest with Sacred Heart slightly outshooting NU 11 to 10.
Northeastern will stay at home this weekend, hosting Long Island on Sunday at 1 p.m. at Parsons Field.
