 Devin Petta
Northeastern defeated the Cincinnati Bearcats 2-0 at Parsons Field on Sunday. Freshman Devin Petta scored both Northeastern goals and Stephanie Gordon recorded her second consecutive shutout in what proved to be a physical and well-contested game.
Just 3:29 into the game, Tinna Nielsen provided a breakaway pass to Petta, who outran the Bearcats defense and put a low shot past goalkeeper Rachel Barnette for her first career goal.
Cincinnati rebounded with solid offensive pressure, but Petta struck again at 32:54, outrunning the defense and maneuvering around a far-out Cincinnati keeper to net her second goal of the game.
In the second half, Cincinnati increased its offensive intensity, hitting two crossbars on prime scoring opportunities. Gordon made a crucial save at 56:54 to even the momentum and keep her shutout streak intact. Cincinnati outshot the Huskies in both halves, but in the end the combination of Gordon and the strict Husky defense held the team scoreless.
The Huskies are now 2-0-0. They travel to the Nike Invitational tournament in Athens, Georgia next week. Their first game is against Clemson, on Friday, September 4, at 4 p.m.
