Northeastern captured its second program win against William & Mary on Friday night, in a 4-3 double overtime thriller. The Huskies are now 2-1-2 all-time against the Tribe.
In a game that held a season high seven combined goals, Northeastern got the scoring started early. In the fourth minute, freshman Devin Petta tallied her 10th goal of the season on a pass down low from senior co-captain Liza Rebello.
William & Mary replied with steady pressure , placing four shots on goal in the first half and spending significant time in the Huskies' end. In the 25th minute, the pressure resulted in a Tribe goal by defender Katy Winsper, her second of the season.
The two teams retreated to the lockers tied 1-1 with William & Mary ahead in shots 9-5 at the half way mark. The Huskies came out firing though, as sophomore Veronica Napoli scored her second goal of the season on a feed from Petta in the 51st minute.
It would take the Tribe over 25 minutes to retaliate. Freshman Katrina Smedley scored her first collegiate goal on a rocket of a header to tie the game at 2-2.
Under a minute later, the Huskies regained the lead, as Greta Samuelsdottir scored a slick free kick from 25 yards. With time winding down, the Tribe found the net one last time, when Krissy Vornadore evened the score at 3-3 in the 84th minute. It was the senior's second goal of the season.
The shots on goal were nine for the Tribe and five for the Huskies as the two teams entered the first overtime. Both squads saw prime scoring chances but the first ten minutes passed without a tally.
The game would finally be decided when Petta launched a high and hard shot in the 106th minute. Junior keeper Jackie Barnard made the initial save but was unable to corral the rebound. From 10 yards out, Napoli crashed in and drove home the game-winning goal.
Both Napoli and Petta earned four points on the night, while Stephanie Gordon made a season-high 10 saves. The Huskies are now 3-1-1 in the CAA and 8-3-1 overall. William & Mary falls to 3-2-0 in conference play, and 9-4-0 on the season.
The Huskies continue their homestand when take on Old Dominion this Sunday at 1 p.m.
