The Huskies played Georgia State to a 1-1 tie Friday evening in Atlanta. The tie moves the Huskies to 8-3-3 on the season and 3-1-3 in CAA competition.
Despite the even final score, the Huskies fired a remarkable 40 shots in the direction of the Georgia State net. Devin Petta and Veronica Napoli led the team with six shots each while Kelly Matthews and Gabbi Jatkola pitched in five shots each. Liza Rebello, who scored Northeastern's lone goal, had three shots on the day.
It was Georgia State who struck first in the match netting a goal in the 19th minute. The goal was scored by Carly Lafferty as she received a pass from Erinique Owens out on top of the box.
Despite ten shots in the first frame, Northeastern was unable to score and the Panthers took to the locker room with a 1-0 lead.
The scoreless Huskies came out firing in the second half, launching 27 shots in the period. The surge didn't bear fruit until the 77th minute when Liza Rebello stole the ball from a Georgia State defender and put one past Georgia State's Heidi Blankenship for her fifth tally of the season.
With NU unable to convert numerous chances, the game continued into overtime. The offensive attack went cold as the Huskies posted just two shots in the first extra period. Thanks to a Stephanie Gordon save on the Panthers only chance of the overtime, the game remained tied 1-1.
Gordon was forced to make just one more save, her ninth of the game, as the second OT mimicked the defensive tone of the first. The lone Huskies shot wasn't on goal and the game ended in a 1-1 tie.
The tie brings Georgia State to 7-4-4 (1-3-3 CAA) on the season.
The Huskies will return to action on Sunday as they take on UNC Wilmington on the road. The match will begin at 1 p.m.
