The Huskies were in third place entering today's match, sitting two points behind first-place Hofstra. When it was all over with, Northeastern had captured its first regular-season title, routing the Pride 4-0 to move into first place and secure home field advantage for next week's CAA Championship.
The top-seeded Huskies will face No. 4 seed James Madison in the CAA Championship next Friday at Parsons Field at 5:30 p.m.
"It was an all-around good team effort," head coach Ed Matz said after the game. "The defense played a great game, and the offense capitalized. I have to thank the crowd. They were an incredible motivation."
The Huskies started off the game's scoring in the 20th minute, when freshman Devin Petta headed in a Kelly Matthews free kick. It was Petta's 14th goal of the season, tying her for the single-season goal record that Keri Irwin set in 1996.
Northeastern would strike again 29 seconds later, as Petta fed Veronica Napoli on the left side of the field for Napoli's fifth goal of the season. Petta would finished with three points on the day, moving her record-breaking season-total to 35.
10 minutes later, the Huskies made it 3-0, when Sandra Magnusdottir lofted in a goal from a quick give-and-go with Kristen Blake off of a corner kick on the right side.
In the second half, Northeastern relied on its defense to contain the play and carry the team to victory. Co-captain Liza Rebello added another goal for insurance, scoring her eighth of the season from 25 yards out on a pass from Greta Samuelsdottir. The match was the 78th of Rebello's collegiate career, tying her for the most-ever played by a women's soccer player at Northeastern.
Hofstra registered 15 shots to Northeastern's two in the second half, and Stephanie Gordon made 10 saves in the later 45. She finished with a career-high 11. Despite the numbers, Northeastern never lost control of the match, following through with solid play until the final whistle.
The win secured the Huskies their first CAA regular season title and home field advantage for next week's CAA Championship. It will be the first-ever postseason CAA soccer tournament hosted at Parsons Field. The semifinals will see No. 2 Hofstra face No. 3 UNC Wilmington at 3 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 6th, and No. 1 Northeastern will meet No. 4 James Madison at 5:30 p.m. The championship will take place Sunday, Nov. 8 at 1 p.m.
