The first seed Huskies fell to fourth seed James Madison in
the semifinals of the CAA Tournament at Parsons Field on Friday night. It was
Northeastern’s first loss of the season on their home turf.
The first half began with playoff intensity, as both teams fought
for possession and momentum. The Dukes scored first, when Teri Maykoski netted
a shot from 23 yards out on the left side of the field. It was her first goal
of the year and only the second goal Northeastern had allowed all season in the
first half of play at Parsons Field. Ashley Flateland and Teresa Rynier
assisted on the score; it was the first of three Rynier would have on the
night.
Northeastern came close to striking back with 10 minutes
remaining in the half, when Greta Samuelsdottir rocketed a free kick from 30
yards out that goalkeeper Diane Wszalek had to punch over the crossbar.
Freshman Sandra Magnusdottir had two solid chances from the resulting corner
kick, but both were thwarted by the James Madison. With Northeastern leading
nine to six in shots, the two teams retired for the half.
Magnusdottir, who was a standout for most of the game, got
Northeastern on the board, three minutes into the second half. Veronica Napoli provided
a sharp feed for Magnusdottir, who was crashing the net and able to place a
shot off of the left post and in. It was the freshman’s third goal of the
season.
The Huskies developed momentum from the goal as the second
half developed. Magnusdottir, who was playing a noticeably offensive game in
the absence of injured freshman Devin Petta, continued to find opportunities.
The Dukes would strike again though, on a Yolam Anderson-Golhor header from a
corner kick in the 65th minute. It was Golhor’s first goal of the
season.
James Madison scored again, under 15 minutes later. Teresa
Rynier, who had an outstanding game, fed a breaking Cate Tisinger from
midfield. Tisinger split the defense and launched a shot over a charging
Stephanie Gordon to put JMU up 3-1. Northeastern could not convert their
chances in the remaining 10 minutes, as the Dukes went on to win and advance to
the CAA Tournament finals. They will play UNC Wilmington on Sunday, Nov. 8 at
Parsons Field at 1 p.m.
