Northover competes in Olympic shot put
Zara Northover became the first Northeastern University alumna to compete in women's track & field at the Olympic Games on Saturday morning when she threw the shot put, placing 16th in her flight. Northover, who represents Jamaica, threw for Northeastern from 2002-07. Northover's second throw of 15.85 meters (52'0) was her best of the competition. Northover qualified for the Olympics with her career-best throw of 17.56 meters (57'7.25) on June 8. At NU, she went undefeated at the conference level, won four New England titles, four ECAC titles and set the NU record of 55'0.75.

Gagnon, Moriarty named cross country captains
Seniors Kristi Gagnon and Brittany Moriarty have been named cross country captains for the 2008 season. Gagnon and Moriarty led the Huskies at the CAA Championship last fall, placing 14th and 25th, respectively. Gagnon owns NU records in the indoor 5,000 and outdoor 10,000 and Moriarty set the outdoor 1,500 mark last spring. The Huskies open the 2008 season Sept. 6 at Central Connecticut State and compete in the CAA Championship at George Mason on Oct. 31.

Cross country roster

Cross country schedule released
The 2008 cross country schedule has been released. The Huskies start off the 2008 season at the Blue Devil Invitational at Central Connecticut State University on Sept. 6. The George Mason Invitational, which takes place Oct. 4 will serve as a preview for the CAA Championship which is scheduled for Oct. 31. The Huskies' only home meet will be the New England Championship at Franklin Park on Saturday, October 11.

Huskies earn All-Academic award
Northeastern was named a 2008 U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association All-Academic team on Tuesday, the USTFCCCA announced. The Huskies, who finished second in the Colonial Athletic Association, earned a 3.164 team grade-point average. The Huskies had 11 top-three finishes at the CAA Championship, including Tramaine Shaw, who won the 100 hurdles and 400 hurdles. In June, NU junior Kirsten Ripple was named to the CoSIDA Academic All-District first team.

Northover named to Olympic team
Zara Northover, Class of 2007, was chosen to represent Jamaica in the 2008 Olympics in Beijing on Tuesday. She won the shot put at the Jamaican Olympic Trials in Kingston, Jamaica, on June 28 and achieved the Olympic "B" standard in the shot put when she won the Island Games with a throw of 57'7.25 on June 8. She competed for Northeastern from 2002-07 and becomes the first Northeastern women's athlete to compete in the Summer Olympics.

Northover gets Olympic "B" standard
Northeastern alum Zara Northover, who competed for the Huskies from 2002-07, achieved the Olympic "B" standard in the shot put while winning the Island Games on June 8 at Mitchel Athletic Complex in Uniondale, N.Y. Northover threw the shot put 17.56 meters, or 57'7.25, to surpass the Olympic "B" standard of 17.20 meters (56'5). Northover, Class of 2007, represents Jamaica and is currently the nation's top-ranked shot putter.
