Gagnon, Moriarty named Huskies cross country captains Aug. 22, 2008 Boston, MAThe women’s cross country team has named Kristi Gagnon and Brittany Moriarty captains for the upcoming season, head coach Sherman Hart and distance coach Renny Waldron announced Friday.
Gagnon, a senior, was the Huskies' top finisher at both the CAA Championship and NCAA Northeast Regional during the 2007 cross country season. She opened the season with a win at the Hofstra Invitational, placed 14th at the CAA Championship in 22:33.8 for 6K and took 77th at the regional in 22:29 for 6K. In track, Gagnon owns Northeastern records in the indoor 5,000 at 17:40.99 and the outdoor 10,000 at 37:17.61. During the 2008 outdoor season, she placed third in the 10,000 (37:17.32) and eighth in the 3,000-meter steeplechase (11:36.21) at the CAA Championship.
Moriarty, a senior, comes off a season in which she placed third in the 1500 at the CAA Championship with a time of 4:33.72, breaking a 23-year-old Husky outdoor record in the process. At the New England Indoor Championship she set a personal best with a time of 4:59.84, breaking five minutes for the first time and finishing seventh. In cross country in 2007, she placed 25th at the CAA Championship with a time of 23:01.2 for 6K.
The Huskies finished fifth in the CAA Championship in 2007 with an average time of 23:07.9 and look to improve upon that in 2008. NU returns its entire squad from a year ago and added several top-level recruits.
The Huskies open the 2008 season Sept. 6 at the Blue Devil Invitational at Central Connecticut State, run in the New England Championship at Franklin Park on Oct. 11 and compete in the CAA Championship at George Mason on Oct. 31.
